PA pressure, parliamentary debate spark remarks against possible U.S. peace plan.
By Jack Khoury | Feb. 4, 2014 |
Palestinian opposition to recognizing Israel as a Jewish state received backing recently from Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, who told his country's parliament that Jordan also opposes such recognition.
Judeh was responding to parliamentary questions sparked by a spate of media reports on U.S. Secretary of State John Kerrys proposal for an Israeli-Palestinian framework agreement. Many of these reports have said Kerry supports Israels demand for recognition as a Jewish state. But Judeh declared that the Hashemite Kingdom's position on this issue is unequivocal: Like the Palestinians, it considers this demand unacceptable.
Judeh also said Jordans position is that any Israeli-Palestinian accord must ensure full Palestinian sovereignty over the territory of the newly formed state, and guarantee full and equal rights to Israels Arab citizens.
Jordan is not negotiating with Israel itself, the minister continued; it is speaking only with the Palestinian Authority at present. Nevertheless, he added, Jordan is a key player in regional diplomatic processes, as it has clear interests in the outcome.

(30,099 posts)Jordan will not agree to arrangements or proposals that dont accord with the kingdoms supreme interests, which mainly concern the issues of Jerusalem, the refugees and security arrangements, Judeh said.
In particular, the minister noted, Amman will not countenance any harm to the rights of Palestinian refugees living in Jordan, particularly their right of return to Israel and their right to receive compensation. In addition, Jordan views East Jerusalem as occupied territory that must become the capital of a Palestinian state under any future arrangement; likewise the occupation must end in the rest of the West Bank.
Jordan has sent clear messages to the Americans that any agreement on the core issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict must take the kingdoms interests into account, Judeh added.
Jordanian and Palestinian sources both told Haaretz that the timing of Judehs statement was no coincidence; it was a response to a heated debate within Jordan about Kerrys planned framework agreement. The sources said that members of parliament from several different factions had submitted questions about the Kerry plan and its implications for Jordan, especially on the issue of the Palestinian refugees, most of whom currently reside in Jordan.
Until now, Jordans positions on the Israeli-Palestinian talks have been relayed mainly as part of a general Arab response, usually via the Arab League. But some PA officials have criticized the kingdom's stance on the issue of security arrangements, after Jordanian officials spoke of the need for an effective force to be deployed on the border between the West Bank and Jordan.

(12,606 posts)Well, perhaps you need some assistance understanding the Palestinian issue in the Palestinian arena.
You see, the Palestinians want their own state, and they also want to be free of Israeli rule, aggression and illegal settlers.
Perhaps if the Israelis left the West Bank, in military and illegal form, then the Palestinians wouldn't need BDS or the threat of global boycott against the Israelis.
This isn't about Jordan. It's about Israel and its treatment of the Palestinians.
Please stop with the baiting.

Why should the majority Palestinians within Jordan recognize a Hashemite state?
The majority of Jordanian Citizens are Palestinians and with an election the new king may not be a Hashemite at all.

(14,851 posts)Unelected.
Rulers should be elected like what happened in Palestine a very long time ago with Hanniyah and Abbas.
Palestinian majority in Jordan and Palestine should be given this opportunity.
