Israel/Palestine
Related: About this forumIsrael continues caring for Gaza patients
Despite the terrifying barrage of missiles, air-raid sirens and Red Alert warnings in half of Israel this week, Israeli hospitals that regularly provide medical care to patients from Gaza and the Palestinian Authority have continued to do so. Haifas Rambam Health Care Campus reported today that its hospitalized patients include three adults and eight children from Gaza, and three adults and two children from the PA. Most of the hospitalized children are in the pediatric oncology or nephrology wards. In addition, the medical center has seven patients from the PA being treated in the outpatient clinics. More patients from the Gaza area scheduled to arrive this week.Despite the security situation, and despite the fact that both sides are fighting, all continues as usual in the realm of medical cooperation, said Yazid Falah, coordinator for Palestinian patients coming to Rambam. Even in times of war we continue to receive patients and give them the care they need children and adults.
As ISRAEL21c reported earlier this week, four preschoolers from Gaza arrived for lifesaving cardiac care at Wolfson Medical Center in Holon through Save a Childs Heart . The Israel Center for the Treatment of Psychotrauma, based at Herzog Hospital in Jerusalem, has set up an emergency hot line for callers in distress, and its METIV Crisis Walk-In Clinic has expanded its hours of operation to meet increased demand. Hadassah Medical Centers Center for Post-trauma Children and Teens is among several Israeli organizations providing emergency training and workshops for parents, social workers and youth coordinators in various parts of the country.
From Haifa, Falah said Palestinian patients feared a cold reception when the hostilities escalated. We explained that would never happen in an Israeli hospital. Here you see people and not nationalities. Many times, Israeli patients reach out to their Palestinian neighbors to help them feel more comfortable and to encourage them. Eventually, all are in the same boat. As in all Israeli hospitals, Arab and Jewish staff members work together daily, and Arab and Jewish patients share rooms. For long-term patients of all ethnicities, they and their families tend to form close relationships. During 2013, Rambams staff treated hundreds of patients from the PA and Gaza, including 650 children and teenagers. There are those who have told me they are ashamed of what Gaza is doing, and others say they are afraid of how people will talk and look at them here in the hospital, said Falah. Others have said they are afraid to return to Gaza. Others just dont know what to think.

(12,804 posts)but that didn't stop the genocide against the Native Americans.
Many Americans, including the Supreme Court, opposed President Jackson's forced expulsion of the Cherokee from their native lands, but that did not deter President Jackson from fulfilling his desire to take their lands away from them.
It's good that some Israelis are helping some of the poorest and abused people in the world. But the state of Israel still condones collective punishment of Palestinians and continues to steal their land by supporting illegal settlements in Palestinian territories.

(12,804 posts)Hell, Great Britain and other Western European colonial powers justified their colonialism with the same kind of dependency. Israel is just following in that wretched tradition.

Answer me this: Help me out...
Does Hamas have a right, are they justified, in shooting rockets at civilians? Is it legit resistance in your view?

(13,685 posts)How do they go about getting what they want?
War, is never an answer to questions of injustice. So how can the Palestinians be made to feel they have been treated fairly?
Larkspur
(12,804 posts)Or are Israelis more important than Palestinians?
shira
(30,109 posts)....is legit resistance has to be one of the most obscene, immoral, and depraved positions a person can take.
You can't be taken seriously when you cry foul about human rights violations.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)Yes.
So, is the Israeli resistance to the Palestinians moral?
You can't be taken seriously when you cry foul about human rights violations.
shira
(30,109 posts)....against an enemy threatening its civilians.
Within reason.
And that's exactly what Israel does, as opposed to Hamas which intentionally goes after civilians. Why does this have to be explained to you?
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)If only it were that simple.
Do the Israelis annex Palestinian lands? Yes. Does the law say that is wrong? Yes.
Proceed.
You can't be taken seriously when you cry foul about human rights violations.

And what makes land beyond the green line (an armistice line, not border) exclusively Palestinian? UNSCR 242 doesn't mention Palestinians at all.
========
I take it you believe Hamas suicide bombings and rockets is legit, justified resistance?
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)No. I am against war.
I take it you are for war? That war is legit, because the warmongers say it is?
And I take it you think whatever land Israel wants, they can legitimately take it?
You can't be taken seriously when you cry foul about human rights violations.

Are you? Because if not, you can't cry foul about human rights violations.

(13,685 posts)What does Israel need to live in peace?
I asked earlier what the Palestinians need and you had no answer.
If you are for peace and against war the answer should be easy for you.

(13,685 posts)I get you have no clue, then?
You haven't the foggiest notion of how peace can be made? Even tho there are many on this forum who have suggested ways to peace, you can't think of any way for peace?
Then why are you here? If you want peace, that is what you should focus on. Instead I see you seem to be focusing on war and think that is all there can be.
The guidelines for this group are against war, and for peace. Where are you on that line? You don't think peace is possible, so how is it you continue to make post after post after post with no peace in mind? Why are you posting here?
shira
(30,109 posts)If you believe Israeli withdrawal will lead to peace, then why did things only get worse once Israel completely withdrew from Gaza in 2005?
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)From the guidelines:
"A good rule of thumb for those who will do well are those who are actively seeking a peaceful and respectful settlement..."
Yes, a ceasefire would be actively seeking peace. Do you want a ceasefire, or more war? According to one recent post Israel officials do not have ceasefire on the agenda. Seems that is a problem.
Whatever, you are here on DU and if you are not someone who is actively seeking peace, then what are you doing here, one must wonder.
Since we are mere bystanders, then seeking peace is the liberal and progressive thing to be writing about. Proceed.
shira
(30,109 posts)I seek something along the lines of the 2000-01 Clinton/Taba Initiative, the Geneva Accord, or 2008 Annapolis (Olmert).
How about yourself? Do you support the same?
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)What is your intent here?
Mine is: read about this issue without having to wade through a bunch of warmongering posts that are not actively seeking peace. We have had quite enough warmongers on DU and most have been shown the door.

(12,804 posts)They treat non-violent Palestinian protesters the same as militant ones. To the state of Israel, especially their right wing nuts, the only good Palestinian is a dead one. Israel is making the same mistake Roman Christians did after they took over the Roman Empire -- the persecuted who obtain the power of the state become the next generation of persecutors and most often are worse than those that once mistreated them.

Over the last few months Hagai Hadas, the prime minister's envoy, has been negotiating with several African countries on similar arrangements, and recently an agreement has been finalized with the east African state.

(30,109 posts)Despite the ongoing rocket fire by Gaza terrorists, Israel has not halted the entry of trucks into Gaza and on Thursday, some 200 trucks carrying food and basic supplies entered Gaza. The government said that the trucks were allowed to pass through for humanitarian purposes, and were inspected and found not to be carrying any items or equipment that could be used to attack Israel.
The trucks are said to be carrying a greater than normal supply of food, officials said. According to sources, the IDF and DEFENSE Ministry officials urged the government's Coordinator of Government Activities in Judea, Samaria and Gaza, Yoav Mordechai, to allow an increased amount of supplies into Gaza, so that residents would have enough to eat in case the IDF begins a ground assault against Hamas.
The trucks enter Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing, which is often targeted by Gaza terrorists for missile attacks. The workers at the crossing are all Israeli, and have been given special safety instructions by the Home Front Command, officials said. It should be noted that one of the terror tunnels destroyed by the IDF several days ago was located right next to the Crossing.
