Maybe it's time after all.JERUSALEM An Israeli military vehicle was hit by an antitank missile in a disputed area along the Lebanese border on Wednesday, according to the Israeli military, and initial reports said that up to nine soldiers were wounded, many of them seriously.
Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attack, saying in a statement that its Quneitra Martyrs Brigade carried it out at 11:35 a.m.
The attack on Wednesday was the latest in a string of recent events along Israels northern frontiers that have sharply escalated tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, and that have raised the risk of broader confrontation.
Israel immediately responded with artillery fire into Lebanese territory, according to the official National News Agency of Lebanon. The Israeli military said several mortar shells had hit a military position on Mount Hermon in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

(90,061 posts)The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah claimed responsibility for an attack Wednesday on an Israeli military convoy, suggesting it was in retaliation for an airstrike that killed six Hezbollah members and an Iranian general.
Israeli military spokesman Peter Lerner said the attack Wednesday involved anti-tank missiles fired at a vehicle on Mount Dov, along the Israeli-Lebanese border. Israeli forces then responded with artillery fire.
There were no immediate reports of casualties on either side.
Hezbollah supports Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and has sent fighters to aid Syrian forces in that country's nearly four-year civil war. Some fighting has spilled over the Israeli-Syria border, particularly in the Golan Heights area.

(90,061 posts)Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group has claimed responsibility for an attack on an Israeli military convoy - as Benjamin Netanyahu warned opponents "look what happened in Gaza".
A political source in Lebanon said a number of Israeli soldiers had been killed and wounded in a "big operation" that saw the convoy attacked in an Israeli-occupied border area.
Israeli tanks reportedly shelled areas of southeastern Lebanon in response to the attack, as Israeli Prime Minister Mr Netanyahu issued his warning.
"My recommendation to those who challenge us in the north is to take a look at what happened in Gaza," he said.

(90,061 posts)Hamas may join Hezbollah in fighting against Israel in an effort to cozy up to Iran, a senior intelligence official from an Arab country said Wednesday, as an Israeli army patrol on the northern border came under fire from the Lebanese terror group in a major escalation of cross-border hostilities.
The official, who spoke under condition of anonymity, said Hamas support could include firing rockets out of Gaza at southern Israeli cities, opening a second front as Israel deals with fire from Lebanon and Syria.
The official said Hamas had made clear in recent days its support for Hezbollahs right to respond to an airstrike earlier this month that killed its top commander in the Syrian Golan Heights, along with an Iranian general and at least five others.
Hamas may not suffice with a statement but may actually allow rocket fire from Gaza into Israel, the source said.

(12,606 posts)The border attack comes a week after Israel assassinated a Hezbollah commander and an Iranian general in the Quneitra area of the Golan Heights in Syria. In the past 24 hours, two rockets hit the Israeli-occupied side of the Golan Heights and the IDF responded by striking Syrian military positions.---
Late Wednesday Wednesday Israeli army vehicles traveling on a patrol road along the Lebanese border fence near Shebaa Farms and the village of Ghajar, which is half in Israel and half in Lebanon, were hit by Kornet anti-tank missiles.

In response to the attack, the Israeli military attacked southern Lebanon with artillery and air strikes, killing a Spanish UNIFIL soldier. An IDF Spokesperson said that the armys response was not over.
