Chinese parents call for anti-gay discrimination legislation
Ten parents of Chinese homosexuals have written to China's top legislative organ and political advisory organ to call for a legislation to stop discrimination against gays. In an open letter to the NPC and the national CPPCC, the parents say there are around 60 million gays in China, going by the ratio of 3 to 5 gays among every 100 people.
Behind them are around 120 million parents whose children "are frequently suffering from discrimination for their sex orientation during their education and career, with some even forced out of school," according to the letter written by the ten parents in question.
After highlighting China's gay population and the discrimination they are suffering, the letter reads:
Except for sexual orientation, our children are no different from the majority. They are kind, independent, caring, patriotic and are making a contribution to this nation in their posts. However, due to some's discrimination, most of them cannot disclose [their sex orientation] to their family and friends... Only with a relevant legislation to protect our children from discrimination based on sex orientation during their education and career, can our parents be relieved.
A survey done by China's sexologist Li Yinhe (李银河
in 2007 shows that in China's middle and large size cities, 91% support equal career opportunities to gays and more than 80% believe homosexuals are created as equal as heterosexuals.
