France gay marriage plan put to national assembly

The French government has presented a divisive plan to legalise gay marriage and adoption to parliament for debate.

The justice minister, Christiane Taubira, told the national assembly that the bill constituted an "act of equality … finally, marriage will be a universal institution".

She said: "We have never underestimated the importance of this reform." The proposals have divided the Catholic-majority country.
