(16,149 posts)Rev. Rick Warren:
...
Whatever it takes.
And I want you to just say, 'This is my commitment, before God and in front of everybody else. I'm in.' "
...
I'm looking at a stadium full of people who are saying 'whatever it takes'.
Whatever it takes, God. Time, talent, energy, money, effort, vision... God, whatever it takes.
Whatever it takes, that's what I'm going to do.
And I believe that today we are making history. We're making history that's going to start a movement that will bring a new Reformation in the church of God and a new spiritual awakening in our world. And, our world needs it.
And today, as you say 'whatever it takes,' you're saying publicly, "I'm in, God. I'm in...
...I'm in.' "

(431 posts)...between the right wing whackos and the "determined to be outraged" left, the president doesn't really have that many friends.

(28,581 posts)The fact that our President is attending function given by those behind the push for the death penalty laws in Uganda and elsewhere is insignificant?
Is that what you are saying?

(431 posts)to enter into discussions in this forum. I was saddened to find that my failure to walk in lock step was greeted with as much intolerance as it might be at Free Republic, and that censorship is a tool of the LGBT Group.
Of course I will continue to persevere in a lifetime of activism interested in securing civil rights for all people. But, I will do so realizing that even some whose goals I support, do not support free expression of ideas.

(52,160 posts)which even the author says he should go to and lecture them about gay rights. It is a very misleading headline.

(28,581 posts)He will go and smaile, shake hands, laugh, make small talk and they will continue to feel as though they have the support of Washington. It legitimizes their views. No one in authority ever comes out and tells them that their views are damaging, murderous, vicious and uncivilized.
Maybe someday.... but not now. We unfortunately still have a government that feels the need to pander to these hate groups.

(895 posts)to NOT go and still lecture them? Say, for example, like at the State of the Union? What a great way to show our different attitude to Civil Rights, contrasting ourselves as a country to those who would murder us in the name of bigotry and religion; and even chastising publicly those who help in such programs.

Thanks for giving the LGBT group a black eye.
Fucking disgusting.
There are bigger things then how well DU's LGBT group is seen to tow the line.

(5,756 posts)didn't get enough attention? You cheapen your argument when you use sensationalist titles like the one for this thread. It tends to make you look like FAUX NOOZ trying to gin up rage.
Frankly I'd rather have him attend this meaningless breakfast than have to listen to the hyperbaric outrage of FOX, Rush and the rest of the RW pundits & politicians spew about how his not attending proves he's not a real Christian and how he hates Christians for the next 24-48 hours. From the Leadership Development site: "Every sitting United States President, since Eisenhower, has attended and provided remarks at the Prayer Breakfast." It would be rather stupid for Obama to break that tradition right now with so many other important things on his plate.
I don't, for a minute, believe his attending this annual breakfast that has been going on for sometime is at all representative of his views. Nor is it meant to be an endorsement of the views of the Fellowship Foundation.
The Philosopher
(895 posts)you shouldn't listen to Rush. Maybe you shouldn't worry so much about what they say and think, those who harm us in many ways, including legislating their interpretation of religion. If his attendance wasn't some kind of approval--even just a validation that their viewpoint is something of value--then he would not need to worry about attending, as your post indicates he does.
"It would be rather stupid for Obama to break that tradition right now with so many other important things on his plate."
How, exactly, does his not attending that prayer event impede his actions on ANY other topic?
dballance
(5,756 posts)Every minute he and his staff have to deal with the crap I mention above takes away from real issues. Jay Carney would have to answer questions in the next daily press briefing about why Obama wasn't' there. Anything short of he was dragging a wounded Jesus off the battlefield in Afghanistan wouldn't have been acceptable to the nuts. And even that might not have done it they hate him so much.
It would also have given republican politicians a talking point to use over and over again at their leisure. The more they say he's not Christian and the more they say he hates Christians the more people start to believe it. Eroding his popularity in this manner takes away from his ability to bypass the GOP House and go out to the people to "campaign" for important issues like he did for the Fiscal Cliff.
Think about the BS and propaganda they've used against him so far. Not having attended would simply have added fuel to the fire.
MNBrewer
(8,462 posts)Because you said you would rather that he attend than YOU have to listen to complaints about his not attending.
That's not the same as impeding his progress on anything.
it's, rather, making you uncomfortable.

(5,756 posts)I'd love a civil discussion rather than being condescended to for my posts. I think you should have left it locked. It didn't seem to be going anywhere good at the time you locked it and there's a whole other thread with the same topic. I think it would have been fine to lock it and send people to the other thread.
Just my overpriced $.02

(2,567 posts)at politics, they'd hold a parallel Prayer Breakfast the week before, invite actual Christians instead of hateful douchebags, and steal the thunder.
However, the Administration sucks at politics. And calling the Democratic merely "sucky" at politics is about the understatement of the millennium.
stevenleser
(32,886 posts)to some extent, they are an extension of the President when it is 'our' guy, but they need to be out there doing things. I think your idea would have been the perfect response. Have a separate prayer breakfast.
The jerks at this one dont have the monopoly on the idea.

(32,886 posts)the President meets with a group of Republicans or Conservatives on anything, he's basically meeting with a group who by and large is racist, homophobic, ethnocentric, sexist and pro 1% and anti 99% on top of it.
He could never attend anything, heck, he couldnt give the state of the union if he was going to avoid gatherings with mostly that leaning.
That said, the fact that the kill the gays Uganda folks are there. Ugh.
MNBrewer

(840 posts)Anyway, the issue is every fundemental religious group hates gay people. Anytime, Obama meets with a fundamentalist religious person he's meeting with someone that doesn believe in gay equality. However, Obama has proven he does believe in gay equality and he has been the single best President to support and promote gay rights. I'm sure it feels good to bash Obama with an sensational title like you've done with your post, it really takes away from the larger context.
