What a beautiful voice. I hope he and his family can heal their relationship and his parents are as proud of this brave, talented son as they should have been from the start. Sad but inspiring.

That young man loves and misses his parents despite what they did - for his sake I sincerely hope they saw this and reconsider what love means.

IMO it was staged. They concentrated too much on his family, and it just so happened he got asked about his family. LOL! Sorry to be a Debbie Downer. Since Survivor was shown to be fake, I feel they are ALL fake. Real are the days of Candid Camera with Allen Funt when they first started reality TV. Those days are gone.

You think this story is not true, because you are such a deeply insightful person. I don't agree on either point. You are calling this brave guy a liar, based on nothing at all. Stay classy, as they say.

Edited for content.

The event as filmed would have taken 4 hours to show per show. They edit what was filmed to show each contestant and their relevant story. They showed more of this young man's story because it is topical and compelling.

any literate person with a dictionary would know. Your claim was 'staged' which means rehearsed, practiced, parameters set in advance and repeatable.
Edited means removal of unneeded or unwanted parts, for the sake of narrative, timing, clarity, quality, any reason.
Editing takes away, and it can manipulate what is present. Staging adds things until nothing becomes something.
Either ignorant or prejudiced, as I said cynicism is often similar in clothing to ignorance.

I love it when folks who know ZERO about that business opine as if they ran NBC for a few years.

The Only thing I said was to read the disclaimers and realize that what producers think will cause a post show conversation and future viewing will be highlighted.
I didn't stage anything. I simply don't care about reality television, do not watch it.

I'm an author, I know what the definition of editing is.

Of course the questions by the panel were "staged." The show plays up the human interest angle for every contestant. The panelists are briefed in advance about each contestant, and their comments and questions are more or less scripted in advance. That doesn't mean that the contestant's story is fake.

Many gay people are kicked out of their homes for being gay. Check out some websites to learn more:

Who cares if it was staged or not, edited or not. You think this stuff doesn't happen? LOL.

Or is that just another try to 'I don't care but I wish I wouldn't see them on tv? I want to see funny shows like where they give elder people heart attacks.'

You're on candid camera here.

His parents seem to have done a great job other than the disowning (which seems nutso)

There will surely be a reunion in the future. At any rate, he seems like a person well-able to create his own family, as so many LGBT are.

(Also, I'm huge fan of Heidi and the dirty old man with the curly-top)

This is a very common happening in many areas of the country, but especially in the south. When I lived in Nashville, I met many, many people who were disowned by their families because they were gay.

A wonderful true tone, his notes all dead on, his breathing and phrasing excellent. He' s really good, and he seems like a really nice kid, too. Thanks for sharing that! I was impressed too, with the way the panel spoke in response to his story. Howie in particular expressed himself well.

I'm sure his parents have found out by now.

I'm sure they are either very stupid right wing religious idiots, or they are trying to make their image better for having kicked him out at 18... most likely they are religious zealots, and are very angry that the media is descending upon them in the next few days...and they have to justify kicking out their son, knowing thousands of gay people in Tennessee have guns, and might just decide to snuff them out..you know,... how that freedom of ownership of guns goes???

Religion and being gay, seems like 300 years of history let this happen. We have the women's movement to thank for letting gay folks think that they were equal to macho police in NYC in 1969... Stonewall. This was the start of the gay revolution in America, for all you wonderfully younger, most gorgeous men and women born after that. Please remember Stonewall, it started something you benefit from now. Thank older people like me, (sorry, I was not there, but in college close by at the time). Thank those "dirty old men" and women who are 60+ now, they have a lot to do with your freedom, as do thousands that died of AIDS under Reagan, Bush-1, or even under Clinton.......they died so that you could be free.....they wanted

what you folks have, and now you're fighting for the OTHER 40 states to give you equal rights you can enjoy, even in Stonewall, NYC. Please let us older folks all know you still know that you are part of the last civil rights movement, and that you, and your friends, will stand up, and run for office, and campaign, and carry-on this battle.

Now, next issue, inequality of income and wages.....being equal in every way, EVERYWHERE in America.....no matter who you are.

No telling what will happen with the family, and he won't win the competition though he's marvelous, but maybe an opera company will see him and help him find training and do what he loves. I am glad they're viewing him as a deserving person, exploitation for their own reasons notwithstanding.

It's kind of like that documentary that came out a few years back with actual footage filmed on 9/11 @ the WTC by filmmakers who were there to film something entirely unrelated - I started to watch, but found myself getting so furious, that it actually scared me, and I had to go take a walk.

When I read about gay children who are disowned by their families, that also makes me angry - not furious as the other example, but I just can't do it.
