New York's Cardinal Timothy Dolan says the Roman Catholic Church has been 'outmarketed' on the issue of gay marriage and has been 'caricatured as being anti-gay'
Dolan discussed the church's positions opposing same-sex marriage and abortion in an interview with 'Meet the Press' moderator David Gregory that will air Sunday on NBC.
Gregory noted that Illinois just became the latest U.S. state to legalize gay marriage and asked, 'Regardless of the church teachings, do you think this is evolving in such a way that it's ultimately going to be legal everywhere?'
Or, he asked, will there be 'a backlash' against gay marriage?
'I think I'd be a Pollyanna to say that there doesn't seem to be kind of a stampede to do this,' Dolan said. 'I regret that.'
Asked why the church is losing the argument on gay marriage, Dolan responded, 'Well, I think maybe we've been outmarketed sometimes. We've been caricatured as being anti-gay.'

(27,452 posts)Dolan and his ilk have taken it way beyond charicature.
Dolan is a first class sleaze. Just watch the documentary "Mea Maxima Culpa." Dolan's true self comes through loud and clear.

BBC News
December 3, 2013
The Vatican has refused to provide information requested by the United Nations on the alleged sexual abuse of children by priests, nuns or monks....
...The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child put a wide-ranging questionnaire to the Holy See - the city state's diplomatic entity - last July, asking for detailed information about the particulars of all sexual abuse cases notified to the Vatican since 1995.
The questions included whether priests, nuns and monks guilty of sexual crime were allowed to remain in contact with children, what legal action had been taken against them, whether the Church required clergy to report abuse to secular authorities and whether complainants were silenced.
In its response, the Holy See insisted that it was "separate and distinct" from the Roman Catholic Church, and that it was not its practice to disclose information about the religious discipline of clergy unless specifically requested to by the authorities in the country where they were serving....

(19,964 posts)Supreme Court Decisions on Marriage: 'Tragic Day for Marriage and our Nation,' State U.S. Bishops
June 26, 2013
WASHINGTONThe U.S. Supreme Court decisions June 26 striking down part of the Defense of Marriage Act and refusing to rule on the merits of a challenge to Californias Proposition 8 mark a tragic day for marriage and our nation, said Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco, chair of the U.S. bishops Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage.
The statement follows.
Today is a tragic day for marriage and our nation. The Supreme Court has dealt a profound injustice to the American people by striking down in part the federal Defense of Marriage Act. The Court got it wrong. The federal government ought to respect the truth that marriage is the union of one man and one woman, even where states fail to do so. The preservation of liberty and justice requires that all laws, federal and state, respect the truth, including the truth about marriage. It is also unfortunate that the Court did not take the opportunity to uphold Californias Proposition 8 but instead decided not to rule on the matter. The common good of all, especially our children, depends upon a society that strives to uphold the truth of marriage. Now is the time to redouble our efforts in witness to this truth. These decisions are part of a public debate of great consequence. The future of marriage and the well-being of our society hang in the balance.
Marriage is the only institution that brings together a man and a woman for life, providing any child who comes from their union with the secure foundation of a mother and a father.
Our culture has taken for granted for far too long what human nature, experience, common sense, and Gods wise design all confirm: the difference between a man and a woman matters, and the difference between a mom and a dad matters. While the culture has failed in many ways to be marriage-strengthening, this is no reason to give up. Now is the time to strengthen marriage, not redefine it.
When Jesus taught about the meaning of marriage the lifelong, exclusive union of husband and wife he pointed back to the beginning of Gods creation of the human person as male and female (see Matthew 19). In the face of the customs and laws of his time, Jesus taught an unpopular truth that everyone could understand. The truth of marriage endures, and we will continue to boldly proclaim it with confidence and charity.
Now that the Supreme Court has issued its decisions, with renewed purpose we call upon all of our leaders and the people of this good nation to stand steadfastly together in promoting and defending the unique meaning of marriage: one man, one woman, for life. We also ask for prayers as the Courts decisions are reviewed and their implications further clarified.

(29,503 posts)moral guardians. Instead, we see that they are not only as corrupt as any lay person, but worse, the hierarchy of the RCC seemed to conspire to hide pedophilia committed by priests, and even shuffled pedophile priests from one parish to another.
Had they practiced what they preach, their influence would likely have remained intact, and they probably could have exerted more control over the public discussion, or asserted themselves more forcefully.
Not apologizing or legitimizing their homophobia in any way, of course.
