Will Christians Ever Bless Gay Marriage?

http://www.businessinsider.com/christians-gay-marriage-2014-9

Just as a federal judge in New Orleans upheld Louisiana's ban on gay marriage this week, Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry, the French entrepreneur, Catholic, and feminist, argued at The Week that while the coalition that embraces same-sex unions may keep growing, the expectation that Christians will eventually accept them is mistaken.

"The false premise goes something like this: Christianity, as a historical social phenomenon, basically adjusts its moral doctrines depending on the prevailing social conditions," Gobry writes. "Christianity, after all, gets its doctrines from 'the Bible,' a self-contradictory grab bag of miscellany. When some readings ... fall into social disfavor, Christianity adjusts them accordingly. There are verses ... that condemn homosexuality, but also verses that condemn wearing clothes made of two threads, and verses that allow slavery. Christians today find ways to lawyer their way out of those. Therefore, the implicit argument seems to go, if you just bully Christianity enough, it will find a way to change its view of homosexuality ..."

That partly captures my intuition about the future.

In the last 15 years, I've witnessed attitudes toward homosexuality change radically in the Catholic community where I grew up.

with a poll reporting "Christians will never support interracial marriages" or; "Christians will never believe in women's equality," or; "Christians will never accept people of color as anything more than the children of Cain."

ELCA anyway. After years of talking about it the ELCA voted to allow gay clergy a few years ago, not without much controversy and the loss of a few congregations in more conservative areas. Their loss.
Now that same-sex marriage is legal here in PA, it is up to each congregation whether to hold the ceremonies in their church, since pastors are legal officiants. We got an email from our synod Bishop suggesting that we discuss the issue at a Council meeting; she subtly encouraged us to consider the issue as the right thing to do in order to be a welcoming church.

discrimination based on sexuality, and they are against homophobia and heterosexism. But they haven't accepted gay marriage, homosexuality, or gay ministers.

That being said, Methodist ministers have performed gay weddings. And the Corrections group in the church is revisiting LGBT issues and looking at change to make the church more accepting. I think it's just a matter of time before they adopt a more liberal policy.

But since leadership organizations like the USCCB have vowed to "double down" on their efforts against issues such as gay marriage and reproductive rights, you'll have to forgive my skepticism.
