Egypt sentences six men convicted of homosexuality to 2 years in jail

An Egyptian court on Thursday sentenced six allegedly homosexual men to two years in jail with labour on charges of "committing debauchery," a judicial source told Ahram Online.

The men, also fined LE200 each (approximately $30), were arrested during a raid on an apartment. According to authorities, the two of them were caught "red-handed."

The court said the men, including a Moroccan national, were promoting their apartment as a location for homosexual activity through Facebook, charging $200 a night.

Same-sex consensual homosexual conduct is not explicitly criminalised by Egyptian law, but same-sex marriage is not legal. Nonetheless, homosexuals have been arrested and punished in the past on morality charges under several laws, including debauchery, immorality or contempt of religion.

Being gay in the vast majority of the Middle East and Africa is dangerous and may even cost you your life. Hell, it isn't always a picnic in the rest of the world, but it sure beats those places.

I don't care if we have an agreement with them and even signed a treaty. So what! What can they do? Send a stern letter? Put out a mean press release? We need to stop assisting countries who don't care for human rights.

I won't hold my breath waiting for any aid to be withheld even as a gesture. I doubt a "strongly worded letter" will even be sent. Gays are just 2nd class there, we are second class just about everywhere.

We are accessories to all crimes against gays in Egypt and wherever else.

But, I have to say it is still better than be executed as in Saudi Arabia and Iran (two of ten countries which execute GLB people). It is sad to say we settle for travesties such as this.

I just wish I was President. I would immediately have a press conference and announce that I will suspend all aide to countries practicing this violation of human rights. Of course with all the other changes I would make. I would be impeached in a week. Lol.

That's why helping any faction of them always violates our principles of human rights. Whatever group (if any) that topples ISIS, ISIL, or whatever the hell they call them next week is going to have the same sorts of 'values' when it comes to gay people and women.

There are no "good" sides over there.
