DPS won’t allow Mayor Annise Parker’s daughter to take driver’s test because she has two moms

A few weeks back I wrote about a woman who was refused a Texas driver’s license because she had changed her name through a same-sex marriage in California.

Turns out the Texas Department of Public Safety won’t honor name changes obtained through same-sex marriages in other states, based on the state’s anti-gay marriage amendment.

Now, it appears the DPS also won’t allow the children of same-sex couples to take a driver’s test if both of their parents names are listed on their birth certificate. It doesn’t even matter if one of their parents is the mayor of Houston.

Here’s Mayor Annise Parker’s tweet from Thursday night:

Annise Parker@AnniseParker

Daughter needs drivers test. Has all docs, some in MomA name, some MomK, but w/ birth cert showing both. DPS says can only be from 1 mom!-A

Long story but the original on file with Vital Records was lost 60 years ago. I have an even shorter version than the President, but it does have a state seal. If the Federal Government took that for a Passport, no state should refuse it either. What does it matter WHO your parents are? They aren't driving or voting for YOU.

are attacking schools as well, turning them into Soviet/Chinese style patriot camps where the benefits of religion, slavery and gun ownership are going to be drilled on standardized tests.

is that the Texas Democratic Party rolled over and played dead from Bush's first election as governor until last year. Hell, they nominated Tony (Look folks, he's Hispanic!) Sanchez, one of Bush's "Patriot"- level fundraisers, to run against Perry because he could finance his own camaign. What the hell do you expect of us rank-and-file voters when the alleged leadership steers straight toward the edge of the cliff like that?

The party hasn't shown any sign of life until this last round, with equal marriage and a guaranteed living wage on the platform and Wendy Davis at the head of the ticket. But hey-- if "progressive" Democrats don't want the state's liberal and moderate voters, the Greens certainly do.

As other states move forward, Texas is moving backward.

And then you have Dan Patrick vying for Lt. Gov. - what a freaking piece of work he is.

There are millions of good dems in Texas and some of the greatest, in fact, are heroes of mine -- Barbara Jordan, Molly Ivins, Ann Richards. It's unfortunate that it's been politically overrun by a nasty crew of ignorant Teabagger bigots but hopefully Dems will prevail in the end, especially if Wendy Davis gets elected.

That's the problem. In 2012 turnout in Texas was 53.8% placing them 48th in overall turnout. Some of this can likely be attributed to voter suppression efforts, other issues are that it's not considered a swing state, so people stay home.

That means that 46.2% of the populace does not care what direction the state is going, of those who turnout, over half vote for the GOP at a minimum (otherwise it would not be red), so 27% of the remainder vote GOP, that's where I got my 73% number from.

The solutions are simple; mass move out and write the state off as a loss. Mass move in and fight for the state. Have competent and organized ground game with sufficient resources to conduct voter outreach and shift some of that 50% of the populace to vote*.

*Going this route has to target the Hispanic community and the youth and undereducated, the Black community is better registered than the white community and has better turnout by 2 points each (15% non-registered with 63% voting 12% not responding to census request).

Data: http://thedataweb.rm.census.gov/TheDataWeb_HotReport2/voting/voting.hrml?GESTFIPS=45&INSTANCE=Nov+2012

Dean could have run a competent ground game, but Democrats don't want a competent ground game because it would cause the GOP to collapse entirely and kill the party, which would then cause the Democrats to have to actually ask themselves some serious soul searching questions about corporatism and how they should treat it.

health tests, she should be allowed to operate a vehicle. Whoever is trying to carry out this travesty should be legally libel for the obstruction of citizen's rights.

And beyond that, it's stunningly stupid.

But, if taken as far as the U.S. Supreme Court, we could safely predict that they would allow this nonsense to continue.
