Throughout the ongoing firestorm directed at Ian Reisner and Mati Weiderpass over their decision to host a reception for Ted Cruz at their penthouse in Manhattan last month, the two gay real estate developers have repeatedly stressed the event was an "informal dinner" and not a fundraiser.
"It is amazing that my businesses are being boycotted by some because I hosted a discussion with an elected official. Not a fundraiser. Not an endorsement. A dialogue," wrote Weiderpass in an op-ed for The New York Observer. "Despite media reports to the contrary, I did not organize the Cruz dinner, but did embrace the opportunityagain, in a non-fundraising settingto discuss a number of important issues, including support for Israel and support for gay rights."*
There were no checks given, it was nothing like that, Reisner told New York magazine.
Well it turns out Reisner wasn't exactly telling the truth, as The New York Times has revealed he cut a $2,700 check (the max individual contribution allowed) to the Cruz presidential campaign around the time of the dinner. Only after the NYT first reported on the dinner did Reisner ask for his check to be refunded.

(18,458 posts)It wouldn't have been half as bad if they just admitted that they were supporting him... Granted that's still a huge double standard... At least then they wouldn't be cowards as well.

When the gay hoteliers Ian Reisner and Mati Weiderpass found themselves under siege for hosting a dinner for Ted Cruz, the Texas senator who is running for president and has been vociferously opposed to same-sex marriage, they repeatedly stressed that the event was not a fund-raiser.
There were no checks given, it was nothing like that, Mr. Reisner told New York magazine, after The New York Times first reported on the mid-April dinner at the Central Park South penthouse.

(802 posts)Why in the world any gay person supports the very people who want gay rights restricted and thousands of them who are murderously homophobic is beyond me. I've heard the "fiscal conservatism" nonsense from a few of them, and frankly I'm amazed the same ilk who cannot see through that greed-based smokescreen also had the intelligence to figure out they are gay.

Like all groups, GLBTQ have a few individuals who are positioned (in most cases: sufficiently rich) not to be touched by the bigotry directed at their group as a whole. See also: Carson, Ben. Or: Fiorina, Carly.
Whatever restrictions are passed on GLBTQ folks, Reisner and co will not be affected by them. Money and connection would see to that. See also: Hastert, Dennis, gets away with practically everything.
Their main aim is to stay that rich, so that the bigotry they have only heard about will never touch them. Enter the short-term perspectives of fiscal conservatism (tax cuts for the rich). Enter the need for powerful friends like thge sanctimonious Texas senator.
It is quite possible that Mr. Reisner did not see his donation as a "real" donation. Those 2,700 Dollars were just a small fee for getting to hang out with Cruz. Compare it to me giving you two dollars to put in the meter while you have dinner at my place. A "real" donation would have been one of those anomymous five-figure contributions to a superPAC.
The one percent has a very different perception of money than the rest of us. See also: Mitt Romney bets Rick Perry for 10,000 Dollars during a GOP debate.
