The two men reached for the lights when the phone rang at nearly midnight.

Jason Holling and Justin Karas rolled from bed and grabbed the call. A woman on the other end asked if this was the adoption number. Jason told her yes, rubbing his eyes awake. She said she was calling from Portland, Oregon, about a 3-week-old baby and began peppering Jason with questions: Why do you and Justin want to become parents? What would you name the baby? Are you ready to be dads?

While Jason responded, Justin thumbed through a thick adoption agency binder with instructions on handling such calls. Jason spoke with the woman for 90 minutes.

It was June 2013, and the start of Jason and Justin’s adoption journey.
