Pride flag at half-staff for Nancy Reagan, LGBT outraged

San Diego got a surprise this morning on University Avenue (Hillcrest) when the Pride flag was being flown at half-staff in remembrance of former First Lady Nancy Reagan.
Some members of the community were outraged when they saw the display and immediately went to social media to voice their concern.

Their main feelings were that during the Reagan administration and AIDS epidemic of the 80’s, the White House moved very slowly in responding to advocacy groups who pleaded for their help and therefore it is disrespectful to show the Reagans any acknowledgement within the LGBT community.

But they should spin it that it would be more appropriate for the flag to be flown this time at half-staff not to honor Nancy Reagan and the Reagan administration, but those who were left behind and who suffered from the policies of the Reagan administration.

...but they decided to pull it and replace it with the American flag until tonight, which I think was the best solution. I'm glad they didn't leave the rainbow flag at half staff since the Reagans don't deserve one scintilla of respect from the LGBT community.

I haven't forgotten the rise and spread of GRID in Salt Lake City in the early 80s. Friends and acquaintances getting sick and dying so frighteningly fast...

The Reagans were in a position to slow the initial onslaught of AIDS and they chose to turn their backs in silence and homophobic recrimination. They're both dead now and I'm glad they're gone.

Update: In honor of following the presidential orders of raising the flag to half-staff, and due to some protests in the community the HBA has decided to replace the Pride flag with the U.S. flag and fly that throughout the day instead. It is being raised as of this writing.

HRC Executive Director Benjamin Nicholls released the following statement about raising the American flag, "In recognition of the President's proclamation and neighborhood sentiment, we're flying the US Flag at half staff through Friday night."
