Rio 2016: Daily Beast 'sorry for outing gay athletes'

12 August 2016 World

US news website The Daily Beast has apologised for publishing an article that may have "outed" a number of gay athletes at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Readers complained some athletes - who were not named but were identifiable from details in the article - were from countries with harsh anti-gay policies.

The reporter had described how he used online dating, including popular gay app Grindr, to get dates with athletes.

The Daily Beast said it had "screwed up" and later removed the article.

beaten, arrested, and murdered. I do hope the editors and the author of the article sleep well at night.

3. Why did a legit news source ever approve publishing this gossipy, gay-shaming

hit piece in the first place? What was the point, since most people in this country either don't care about who someone loves, or (one way or another) have come to accept gays aren't going away. The 'reporter' -- and by that, I mean tabloid rumor monger -- did it for the shock value, to be cruel, and never ever thought that some of the people he was outing will face terrible danger in their own countries just for the suspicion of being gay.

Removing the article after the damage is done is too little, too late. The Daily Beast should also remove the reporter.

4. Nico Hines has been "recalled" from Rio by The Daily Beast, according to the IOC.

Not sure how the International Olympic Committee would know, but if true, it's not enough, IMO.

His article is going to bring suffering on Olympic athletes from homophobic countries who were doing exactly what "100% straight" Nico Hines was doing, and Hines doubtlessly knew (somewhere along the line in compiling the article) that exposing these athletes would make persecution of them in their home countries more likely.
