Thousands rally against gay marriage in Tijuana: 'We have the right to defend our values'
http://www.latimes.com/world/mexico-americas/la-me-ln-tj-gay-marry-20160911-snap-story.html

Thousands of opponents of same-sex marriage, including Tijuana’s new Roman Catholic archbishop, gathered for a rally in the city Saturday to protest Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto’s proposed constitutional reform favoring the right of couples to marry regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.

The morning march to City Hall was one of dozens of such protests across Mexico that took place Saturday, drawing a combined hundreds of thousands of citizens. The demonstrations come on the heels of a series of legal victories scored by proponents of same-sex marriage in states across Mexico.

I suppose it's an unavoidable side effect of having been successful.

As usual, the Roman Catholic Church is involved.

Mexicans march for gay marriage after opponents rally

12 September 2016 Latin America & Caribbean

Supporters of gay and lesbian rights marched to Mexico City's Metropolitan Cathedral in response to protests on Saturday opposing same-sex marriage.

Demonstrators carried banners saying "I respect your family, respect mine."

The cardinal of Mexico City, Norberto Rivera Carrera, denied the Catholic church was behind the protests in cities across the country.

In May, President Enrique Pena Nieto proposed a bill which would legalise same-sex marriage nationwide.

Out of 128 million? Even if the 300k number was real, it's not much divided amongst 16 cities in a country that is heavily Catholicized like Mexico.
I assume Nieto has thd backing of the PRI in his attempt to liberalize the law?
