Artificial Intelligence Can Probably Tell If You're Gay

Last edited Sat Sep 9, 2017, 02:55 PM - Edit history (2)

Artificial intelligence can now tell whether you are gay or straight simply by analyzing a picture of your face.

Two Stanford University researchers have reported startling accuracy in predicting sexual orientation using computer technology.

Dr. Michal Kosinski and Yilun Wang, whose research will be published by the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, say that AI can distinguish between the face of a heterosexual man and a homosexual man in 81 percent of cases. For women, the predictive accuracy is 71 percent.

In comparison, the scientists say, the average human is less adept at identifying between straight and gay people purely based on an image: We are only able to guess correctly in 61 percent of cases for men and 54 percent for women.

They gave a comparison with average humans to show the effectiveness of artificial intelligence. I suspect that there are plenty in the LGBTQ+ community whose gay-dar is more accurate than the AI though.

Back in the day, I can't remember when, I had friends who had a gadget on their keychains that would emit a signal when near someone else who also had a similar device.

I don't know if any of the guys ever 'hooked up'.

Row over AI that 'identifies gay faces'

11 September 2017 Technology

A facial recognition experiment that claims to be able to distinguish between gay and heterosexual people has sparked a row between its creators and two leading LGBT rights groups.

The Stanford University study claims its software recognises facial features relating to sexual orientation that are not perceived by human observers.

The work has been accused of being "dangerous" and "junk science".

But the scientists involved say these are "knee-jerk" reactions.

Details of the peer-reviewed project are due to be published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

Imagine if the fundies take over, then every time you go to the DMV, you get your picture taken, and they run it through the software. If it comes back saying "Gay", then off to reparative "therapy" with you...
