Lisa Middleton, the first trans person to be elected to a non-judicial office in California was sworn in as was bisexual lawyer Christy Holstege.
November was a record-breaking year for LGBT people being elected into local and state offices.
The end of one era, and the beginning of anotherthe all-LGBT era, wrote Tony Mataras. Congratulations, Councilmembers Middleton and Holstege. Thank you, Councilmembers Foat and Mills.
The kind of actions that made my election possible took place over the last 15 to 20 years in this city, Middleton said after the ceremony. I am thrilled to have an opportunity to represent Palm Springs and Palm Springs values throughout this state and throughout this country.
Middleton said she is aware of the significance of her appointment in the Golden State.
It has not escaped my attention that my election is a turning point in state history, but it is not a turning point in my city, she said.
Middleton added on Wednesday, "I begin this evening humbled and prepared and deeply in debt for your trusting me."
