1. The books were wonderful. Maupin nailed the ethos of

70’s San Francisco. I lived there after college. No money (a woman’s salary) but we enjoyed every inch of the city. Our guide to dining out? The Underground Gourmet. Cheap ethnic food all over the city. Life was simple then.

3. I thought of going there a few years ago on vacation

But I'm in my 70's and walking is difficult;
photos of the steep streets dissuaded me.
