Ricky Gervais To Anti-Gay Republicans: ‘If It’s A Choice, Have A Go’

British comedian Ricky Gervais poked fun at the Republican presidential candidates who oppose equal rights for gays and lesbians during an appearance on CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight, saying, “Just because they’re offended by someone being gay, it doesn’t mean they’re right,” he said. “It’s a strange thing that — that gay — being gay is a choice. No, being gay isn’t a choice, you know? I want to go, ‘Look, you try it, then. If it’s a choice, have a go.’”

4. Actually, what you and Ricky are talking about is precisely the problem

BECAUSE being gay has been considered such a horrible taboo by this patriarchal society, some men (and maybe some women, who knows?) who are adamant about this "choosing" business were themselves gay or perhaps bi by nature but fought it and fought it and fought it until they repressed it good and strong (n.b. Larry Craig because repressed parts of you don't stay repressed). They truly believe it's a choice because that's their lived experience. Those who don't HAVE to "choose" to be hetero but do like supporting this patriarchal society for their own reasons are more than happy to say, "Yeah, that's right. You gotta CHOOSE to be gay."

And see if you chose to be heterosexual. Everyone is heterosexual until they try it with a gay person.
