A diet designed to imitate the effects of fasting appears to reverse diabetes for type 1 and type 2 diabetes by reprogramming cells, a new USC-led study shows.
The fasting-like diet promotes the growth of new insulin-producing pancreatic cells that reduce symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in mice, according to the study on mice and human cells led by Valter Longo, director of the Longevity Institute at the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology.

(32,632 posts)My 3rd week on the 5/2 fast. First day was hard. After that it gets easy. I fast 24 hrs on mondays and thursdays.
After seeing Michael j Mosleys BBC documentary "Eat, Fast and live longer"
I decided to give it a go.. It's not a total water fast only diet as you can eat about 500 to 600 calories per 24 hrs.. It's not that hard... Works for me!! Dropped my A1C like a rock and the last physical/blood work results were perfect. The doc, Valter Longo that is in the USC blurb is also in the film along with Dr. Krista Varady who promotes the Alternate day fast.. Looks like they got pissed that Mosley was getting all the credit for their work...
Check the youtube link for the whole program... 5:2, alt day etc.. good stuff

My sugar is fine, weights not bad either. Many, too many to list health benefits. Best of all, cost zero to do

(18,312 posts)mice got 50% caloric intake on day 1 and 10% caloric intake on days 2-10, ate regularly for 10 days then another fasting period.
Animal studies don't always transition well to human studies.
While interesting, it is too limited a study to even consider it "promising"

(6,452 posts)I can't say whether or not this will work (as heddi mentioned, animals != humans). But I do know that if I eat a high fat 800-1000 calorie diet for a couple of days, with zero carb intake, my blood sugar levels drop to within normal ranges for 2-3 days afterwords with little insulin support.
Further research is definitely warranted, but I suspect the results won't translate well to humans.
