Related: About this forumThe latest Covid Vaccinations are available and I have a question.
We previously got all our Covid shots and boosters at CVS Pharmacies and they were all Moderna. Currently, CVS is only offering Pfizer, except for one or two inconvenient locations offering Moderna.
I have researched this issue and found both are "new" vaccines and not boosters. Both work the same way, have the same side effects, efficacy, and target the latest K-2 variant (why they named it after the second highest mountain on Earth is a question for another day).
We would appreciate any information to help us determine if we should stick with Moderna or get Pfizer this time. In other words, can we "mix and match?"
My doc has told me it doesnt matter.

(15,359 posts)a little wider range of coverage to have had both. So, if she was correct as of last year, switching up would be beneficial. I'm not saying you should rely on that but may be something to search for. It sounded reasonable to me, and I've known her for years.

(23,448 posts)Like you after about six of these shots/boosters in all, I was on the fence about getting one this Fall. But, then simpleton MAGAs around me started getting infected and they said it was like the first one they got, down for days with a fever with it easing, then coming back. It also spreads like wildfire, unlike previous strains that didn't infect everyone in a household.
So, I just got my booster on Monday. I don't even recall which one it was. I'm sure it's on the pharmacy paperwork.
Yes, you can mix and match. Just get it done, would be my advice.

(7 posts)I started with Moderna and have stuck with it throughout, more as a precaution. I used CVS as well and their website allowed me to filter on the brand, which seems to have been your experience as well. Still, there doesnt seem to be any strong medical authority expressing concern for switching mRNA vaccines.

(6,074 posts)I liked Novavax the best. Pfizer is slightly weaker, which can be good for slightly less side effects. Both Moderna and Pfizer are mRNA whereas Novavax is the actual spike protein plus some adjuvicants. Mixing types isn't an issue, get what you can. I'd only go out of my way for Novavax as it has less side effects, I had zero soreness and no other effects.
