Elderly people with high blood levels of vitamins and omega 3 fatty acids had less brain shrinkage and better mental performance, a Neurology study found.
Trans fats found in fast foods were linked to lower scores in tests and more shrinkage typical of Alzheimer's.
A UK medical charity has called for more work into diet and dementia risk.

(28,791 posts)She never really cooked, everything came out of a box or a can.
Now, home cooked meals from fresh ingredients, replaced the margarine with butter, white flour replaced with whole wheat, etc.
she's doing 100% better than she was 3 years ago, and most of her symptoms are so slight as to be unrecognizable to most people.
The only thing is, she used to eat a lot of fish, but now we hardly eat any. it's too scary when you don't know where they came from or if they'll be any left for the grand-kids...

Low fat & heart healthy.

(41,453 posts)As they state, a lot more research is needed; but it seems plausible that diet would be one factor in Alzheimers, as it is in many chronic diseases.
