Alzheimer's: Diet 'can stop brain shrinking'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16344228

A diet rich in vitamins and fish may protect the brain from ageing while junk food has the opposite effect, research suggests.

Elderly people with high blood levels of vitamins and omega 3 fatty acids had less brain shrinkage and better mental performance, a Neurology study found.

Trans fats found in fast foods were linked to lower scores in tests and more shrinkage typical of Alzheimer's.

A UK medical charity has called for more work into diet and dementia risk.

She never really cooked, everything came out of a box or a can.

Now, home cooked meals from fresh ingredients, replaced the margarine with butter, white flour replaced with whole wheat, etc.
she's doing 100% better than she was 3 years ago, and most of her symptoms are so slight as to be unrecognizable to most people.
The only thing is, she used to eat a lot of fish, but now we hardly eat any. it's too scary when you don't know where they came from or if they'll be any left for the grand-kids...

That has as much or more omega 3 as fish.

Low fat & heart healthy.

As they state, a lot more research is needed; but it seems plausible that diet would be one factor in Alzheimers, as it is in many chronic diseases.
