Melamine from Soup Bowls Found in Urine
By Kathleen Struck, Senior Editor, MedPage Today
Published: January 22, 2013
Reviewed by Zalman S. Agus, MD; Emeritus Professor, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania
Melamine, a common plastic previously linked to urolithiasis in children and adults, was detected in urine after ingestion of hot noodle soup served in melamine tableware, a small trial found.
Twelve young adults in a randomized, crossover trial showed significantly more melamine in urine after eating soup from melamine bowls than when they ate from ceramic bowls, according to Chia-Fang Wu, MS, PhD, of Taiwan's Kaohsiung Medical University, and colleagues.
Total 12-hour melamine excretion was 8.35 mcg (SE 1.91) after eating from the melamine bowls, compared with 1.31 mcg (SE 0.44) when ceramic bowls were used, the researchers reported online in JAMA Internal Medicine.
Wu and colleagues, for their part, noted that they used a single brand of melamine bowl. "The amount of melamine released into food and beverages from melamine tableware varies by brand, so the results of this study of one brand may not be generalized to other brands," they wrote.

(21,875 posts)8. I’ve seen worse. I don’t believe it is misleading.
The melamine came from soup bowls and was found in urine.

(15,663 posts)9. Not misleading, just ambiguous as to which was found in urine.
Just a pet peeve.
