I'm with Bill Maher on this one. JHC. Where are all the happy uplifting movies?
Many of us are drowning in sorrow. Rented Nomadland and had to walk away. With covid death and all the killings of loved ones and the residual filth that the former guy left us, my compassion meter is at 99%

1. Two really, really good movies I just watched
Maiden Voyage about a yachting race around the world and first ever all women crew. True story.
Searching for Sugar Man. Great true story with wonderful music and unbelievable but true ending. |

4. Searching for Sugar Man is a great film.
That scene when he opens his concert in South Africa gets me every time.

5. Me too, and right before that when his daughter sees a limousine at the airport
and thinks it is for someone else. I friend of mine lived in South Africa for a long while and went to one of his concerts.

17. Ok, I just watched it. Spoiler Alert
Spoiler...
Am I the last person on the planet who has never heard of him? (My husband had already seen this and didn't say anything till it was all over) His music and lyrics and voice are transcendent. Morebeautiful than I had ever heard. But, the documentary to me was very unsettling. It left me with millions of questions. Who was the mother of his daughters? Obviously someone made a ton of money. He doesn't care or didn't care? His daughters didn't care? They were all just so altruistic that they didn't even question it? Perhaps all the answers are out there and you have to look it up yourself? |

18. It really was something that he wasn't upset he had been screwed out of all
those royalties. I googled him and I believe his daughter said he gave away most of the money he made from his South African concerts. And yes, what a voice and great lyrics. Next watch Maiden and you’ll love that as well.
I had never heard of him either until I saw the movie. I feel richer for having seen it. |

But I agree - it's hard to find movies that don't make me feel tense or anxious.

9. Why my friend in Boston has gotten hooked on old TV
shows. Columbo great example of how crime shows have gone to pot. Columbo was more about human behavior and deduction. Not about microscopic dna.

13. Columbo was a great TV show!
It was the last "cop show" that I really liked, other than some comedies such as Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

14. I've watched all 14 seasons of Murdoch Mysteries a few times now. It is a crime
show but it takes place around 1900 in Toronto. The characters are nice and often funny. They also include all sorts of famous persons from that era into their episodes. Like Mark Twain, Houdini, Elizabeth Arden, Tesla, A. Graham Bell and others. Of course creative liberty is taken but they tend to get the personalities right. Like Tesla is a nice guy and Henry Ford is a real jerk.
One the other hand I am watching Your Honor now on Showtime and I am wondering if I should quit because it is so upsetting. If I knew it had a happy ending I would feel better but I don't know what is going to happen. So much cruelty. I may check out Columbo again too. I have tried Midsomer Murders and that is good but their shows are 2 hours long and I don't have the patience for that. |

21. Columbo is/was FAB!
Great lead in Peter Falk, and a very nifty way of turning around the basic detective story from a "whodunnit?" to a "howdidtheydoit"? My all time fav was when Johnny Cash was the guest star.
And I agree that on old TV alone, there are 10s of thousands of hours, if not more, of joyful, funny, and/or uplifting moments. |

16. Youhave Netflix. I think you'd really like 'Wanted". Its
an Australian TV series. Two very different women teaming up running from the law. Think in top 5 of anything I've seen in years. And dialogue not difficult to understand
Hope I haven't already mentioned to you before ![]() |

19. I just watched one on Prime called "Spontaneous"
It's a 2020 release about a school where members of the senior class are randomly exploding. Doesn't sound like it but it's a romantic comedy about two teens who crack wise and fall in love amidst a time of fear and isolation. It's actually pretty fun and the leads (Katherine Langford and Charlie Plummer) are wonderful.
