If you haven't seen it yet check out 'Death in Paradise' on Netflix.
A buttoned-up London detective is sent to a small, laid-back Caribbean island to investigate the murder of a police officer. He is theoretically there only for the one case but ends up staying. It is cute, well-done and fun to watch.

(33,643 posts)It is a fun show, reasonably unpredictable, fun to watch to see if you can 'solve the case', Poirot-style. It's very reminiscent of Poirot on a Desert Island ...
*** SPOILER (about the cast) ***
Both the two main leads (male and female), along with what I'd call the 4th main character ... will leave the show during the first few seasons, replaced by other characters/actors. So don't get too attached. By Season 4, Dwayne is the only one of the original 4 main characters left.
The replacement of the first main character is actually just fine ... we warmed up to Humphrey after not too long and now like him better. We do miss the female lead though ... maybe because we had more time with her before she left.
*** SPOILER END ***

(737 posts)Danny John-Jules will not be in the next series - so all the main characters will have changed. Not sure it can survive his loss.

(22,932 posts)we got tired of the first half of the series where the detective is a tight-assed prig who insists on wearing a coat and tie on a tropical island and just never ever seems to enjoy life. The second half changed the character into a much more sympathetic young guy who appreciates the laid back beauty of the island.

(813 posts)It's a great show to lighten things if you watch heavier things. After finishing Bosch, Season 3, we were "Oh, yeah, back to Paradise".
Before Death in Paradise, we had used "The Republic of Doyle" the same way.

(23,817 posts)Never watched it when it was on PBS, so had 7 seasons to watch on Netflix. I actually liked the stuffy DI Richard Poole and was sorry to see him go. Loved the way Camille interacted with him. Sorry to see her go as well. But got to like DI Humphrey Goodman. Only half way through season 5, so still plenty left to watch.
