For reals get out enjoy our wonderful art institute or museum campus by the lake front . Any kind of music you like there is always some great stuff going on in clubs. Take in a lecture at the cultural center for free . The second floor of the Chicago history museum has a great exhibit on how workers rights were fought for hereand Pullman co history and strikes
May Day started with German workers here etc. or stop by the IWW headqtrs on the northwest side to check out what's going on with workers right now and find out why it is still big day here
http://abc7chicago.com/news/may-day-in-chicago-thousands-march-for-immigrant-rights/1939699/ Or visit the university of Chicago area or Jackson park where the Obama museum will be or all the gangster hangouts when mobs ruled the town. If you love the tall buildings take a tour with the Chicago Architectual Foundation very informative always Pick up a Reader paper free in boxes or even red eye on the street for night life and cinema happenings along with opinion pieces or just get on the brown line el and ride though the big buildings around the loop or ride the halstead or western bus from one end to another( very long routes) to see all that is different neighborhoods one day if you like sociology experiments .Cubs are in town now -just walk around the wrigley field area when a game is on this week even if you don't go inside Addison el stop some crazy sports bars up and down then keep walking to boys town you will see the big rainbow arches on the street to greet you in the area full of gay pride. So many different ethnic areas with great vibes to take in

I admit, when I walked through Times Square in Manhattan many years ago, I WAS afraid. However, Times Square was not exactly family-friendly in 1984 from what I remember. I emerged unscathed.

Moral of the story: If you stay in well-lit, well-travelled and *tourist-friendly* areas, you're going to be OK.

Seriously - It all depends on who you're with, where you go, what you see, and --the weather.
In other words - like anyplace else.

Enjoy your vacation!

You might like to try a Polish restaurant, for a change of pace.
Starapolski is good, though not in the downtown area.
