Related: About this forumI'm crazy - paid $21.95 for ham hocks
I use ham hocks when I cook dried beans and make bean soups. My local market quit carrying them. I tried the Mexican smoked neck bones, but flavor was not to my liking. Tried chopped bacon, just not the right flavor. Was typing in an order for home delivery on Amazon Fresh and saw ham hocks for the astounding price of $21.92 for 2pounds. Ham hocks are usually at the bottom of the meat food, a package might run $4
I gasped at the price, but went for it. I now have 2 pounds of ham hock in the fridge, will divide into 4 parts.
Tomorrow I'm making Split Pea soup with ham hock!

(30,778 posts)How many meals will you get out of those ham hocks? More than just one!

(13,571 posts)Local small grocery chain, slightly upscale but I trust their in-house butcher shop.
They were out!
I haven't had a ham hock for more than ten years.

(36,827 posts)Its been a while since I bought any, but I remember the price as reasonable (at least by todays standards). I can also get smoked ham shanks which I generally prefer and they are vacuum sealed which keep well in the freezer. Thats why I havent bought any in a while. Another option is to inquire at the butchers counter at supermarkets that still have them. Even if they dont have something theres a decent chance they can order it for you at a price far cheaper than Amazon.

(9,581 posts)Ham hocks for beans are one of life's necessities. The only thing that starts to compare is the ham bone with meat from a large ham. I probably have at least 6 hocks in my fridge right now.
Is there a Kroger where you are? They almost always have them.

(17,339 posts)But it's a lot more costly than it was a year or two ago as well. Not $21.95 expensive, mind you.
Anyway, enjoy your soup!

(102,423 posts)Damn, that is expensive. But, yeah, I calculate per meal cost when I add somewhat overpriced meat to a bean dish, soup, or stew and it usually comes out pretty favorable, so... (I always make enough to freeze too, so when you factor in time, it is definitely worth it).

(2,674 posts)What we don't eat, I put in quart containers, so i will be sure to have some soup left over to freeze. Yes, that does bring down the price per meal.
I had planned to make soup today, but had forgotten Dr's appt. Tomorrow we are going to restock our booth at the antique mall, so Sunday will be my soup making day.
Probably make egg salad sandwiches to go with the soup (hard-boiled eggs, grated raw carrot, sweet pickle relish, mayo).

(2,674 posts)Used about 2/3 of one ham hock. Was well worth the money, soup had the deep ham hock taste that was missing on my last batch of soup. Made almost a gallon. Put 2 quarts in the freezer.

(10,165 posts)and I live in a very expensive part of the country - I suspect Amazon is building a delivery or similar expense into the cost.
So how did the soup turn out?
