(32,974 posts)I baked a mackerel filet that was in garlic olive oil, so I made sauteed spinach & onions with garlic and Parmesan buttered garlic pasta.
My 2 cats were very very enthusiastic about the oil from the tin that held the mackerel, very enthusiastic.
My brother, who had his cancerous right kidney removed on Tuesday was discharged to home this afternoon. His daughter, son and daughter in law are all RNs, I'm sure one or more is checking on him. I am glad he is home.
Thank you for your support and well wishes, it was appreciated.

I've never eaten mackerel in my life. The Latino kitchen staff where I used to work would make it occasionally for family meal, but I couldn't get it past my nose.

(32,974 posts)When my dogs with epilepsy were alive I raw fed them, canned mackerel ( 70cents/can) were a frequent protein source.
The raw diet had minimal preservatives so the meds to control the seizures worked more effectively while passing through their livers.
I did not eat the mackerel then, years on..🤔

(32,974 posts)This brand-https://www.luckyvitamin.com/p-1911696-wild-planet-wild-mackerel-in-extra-virgin-olive-oil-4-4-oz?LanguageCode=EN&locale=en-US&as=nd&scid=scplp169018&sc_intid=169018&gclid=CjwKCAiAl-6PBhBCEiwAc2GOVMM0VOPO7H0Gd3QWluWw3_9ir95vGUoz7XL21sDIBM0S6JEb-CMN0hoC0eoQAvD_BwE
From that website-"Mackerel is known as Saba in sushi restaurants where it is served grilled. This fish is delicately textured and resembles a fresh tuna steak in flavor."
This review is true -"Tasty, fresh, meaty, a lot in the can. These were delicious. It is hard to find a canned wild fish that uses extra virgin olive oil and this does, which is why it tastes so good - other cans of fish just use regular olive oil and it coats the fish in a thick yellow goop that I don't like. I eat the whole can for lunch over a large raw salad topped apple cider vinegar and it is so good. Will buy again ..
I kinda think it was around $1.50 for a can that served 1 biped and 2 cats. I'd get it again

(23,314 posts)I will order a few and try them out. My dad used to eat kippered snacks in a can. He loved them. I wonder if they are similar?

(22,037 posts)Were meeting friends at a French restaurant on NYCs West Side. Its restaurant week in New York with many specials being offered.
After looking at the menu online, the Landlady(!) is going to have chicken liver pate, braised lamb shank with mashed potatoes, mushrooms and a port wine reduction followed by white chocolate gelato.
Im going with escargot en croute followed by boeuf Bourguignon with mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach. Vanilla ice cream for dessert.
It all sounds deliciously decadent and well probably order a bottle of Pinot Nour and pay far too much!

(4,516 posts)It's a rice dish with; onions, celery, garlic and (traditionally leftover) meat. There are as many different varieties as cooks. I put ground beef, bacon and chopped chicken liver in that last batch. But you can use anything, I have used venison, wild boar and duck, quail and rabbit in the past. You can find recipes on YouTube and Pinterest.

(43,161 posts)I've taken to the quickest of crusts. Don't roll, just make it into crumbly lumps and press it down. It's about the consistency of those quick cook biscuit dough in a can. It works ok if the temp is high enough - 410.

(17,437 posts)I made a pot of beans from some ham stock in the freezer marked "strong." It is very tangy. Next time I'll believe my note and use half the bag.
We had sandwiches with deli meats. I chose a simple roast beef and lettuce on whole wheat and TJ had something fancier.
FLFC had some of the ham from the soup, bits of the deli meat and a mini-burger made just for him with 85% lean ground chuck I found at the little butcher at less than $2 a pound (day old). He loves a fresh cooked meal. He had some of his Temptations treats afterward.
Here is a video of him in mid-December enjoying those treats.
