(114,666 posts)I found out a long time ago that if you steam winter squash until it's barely fork tender, then toss it in butter, fresh parsley, and black pepper, it's a very nice vegetable. Dinner guests were always amazed they were eating squash, they'd always had it once a year at Thanksgiving, cooked to mush and laced with sugar and spices and hidden under a layer of mini marshmallows. It was a revelation to them all.

Why do that to perfectly delicious veggies?
Keeping it simple almost always results in better flavor/texture.

(114,666 posts)until somebody gave me a big sack of winter squash from her garden and I tried cooking it the way I described. It really is a very nice veggie and the fresh parsley made the color pop.
The only other way I've cooked it is in tempura, it's really nice there, too, because it doesn't get cooked to mush.
Turnips, on the other hand, are something I only eat when I'm skint. They require an oven.

Definitely goes on the "must try" menu, so thanks for the recipe!
