The superlative cauliflower mushroom..

We found this beauty last sunday… a huge chunk of it is sitting in my freezer as we speak. I'm thinking, because of it's similarity in shape and texture to egg noodles, I might make a stroganoff with it.

I note the smaller ones to your right.

Cher

edited to add: that is stunning moss. Do you usually find moss and chanterelles together?

Also, I laugh at your "victory" expression. You'd have thought you caught 12' swordfish.

that's my foraging mentor and often cribbage victim, lol.. but, to answer your question, we usually find the chanterelles under salal and/or oregon grape ground cover. The cauliflower is always going to be on conifer trees or stumps. And yeah, he said that in 30+ years of foraging, that's the biggest he's ever found.. by the way he was hooting and hollering, you'd have thought the Seahawks won the superbowl, and he hit the lotto at the same time lol

But, it's got a big-assed razor clam on it... My foraging mentor picked it up while we were out on the coast digging clams laat winter

One cooks / dries them for home use, the other sells them to restaurants. Neither will divulge their best foraging spots.

I get a few from both after a pick. Always ask the same question - "Where did you find these?"

A look and a shake of the head - "I can't tell you." Sort of a standard banter. Yet the freshest savory chanterelles I've ever had.

This is really my first year of mushrooming. Went a few times last year, but the season was just terrible… anyway, yeah, my buddy's the same way -
"What you been up to?"
"Mushroom picking"
"Oh cool! Where??"
