Do you have a favorite tartar sauce recipe?

I am not happy with mine which is simply mayonnaise, lemon juice, minced onion, and either dill or sweet relish.

I am sure there are some secrets out there if you are willing to share.

Fresh Tartar Sauce
Makes about 1-1/2 C. of fresh tartar sauce
All veggies should be chopped or diced to approximately the same size.

Fresh Dill, chopped (how much or how little is a matter of personal taste)
¼ C. Red Onion, chopped
1/3 C. Cucumber, diced
1 Small sweet red or yellow pepper (pickled shown, but fresh is lovely too)
1 Dill Pickle, chopped (Optional: feel free to add a sweet pickle as well)
Rind of ½ Lemon, well washed and grated fine
Juice of ½ Lemon
1/3 C. Mayonnaise
½ C. Plain Yogurt (I prefer goat yogurt, but any thick, unflavored kind will do)
Salt and Pepper to Taste

Calories: 30 per Tablespoon!

No preservatives or stabilizers used, no sugar either so feel free to pour it on!

(That's servings for 8) It will last longer without the chopped fresh cukes. Both the onion and cucumber cast off liquid and thin the sauce where the preserved ingredients don't.

I use a pinch to each heaping large spoon of mayo. then add some dill and sweet relish.
I'll have to try adding lemon juice.

I know it's not usually used... but I can tell the difference if I make it without it. It seems like it makes the mayo less sweet.

I like the McIlhenny red, chipotle and mild green. I also like Tapatio and Texas Pete. Then there's the Yucateco green habanero (do not confuse this with the McIlhenny green!) And of course, Sri Racha (Rooster Sauce).

Back you your original question on tartar sauce...... The best recipe depends on your intended application and the ingredients you have on hand.
