What's for Dinner, Labor Day, Mon., Sept. 1, 2014

I'm making up salad this morning for later. It will be a mixture of chopped romaine, watercress, and a few other greens from my garden. I will mix them with vinaigrette.

I also have some zucchini slices ready for breading. I'd like to try my fresh horseradish for a sauce. This will be the first time I've harvested my own horseradish and made anything from it, so advice is welcomed.

It's warm here today, so the cold main course will rule.

I was thinking of romesco sauce over choice of cold chicken breast or fish, served with the salad greens.

They love August, and it's easy to see why.

I am making Baked Zucchini stuffed with ham and cheese. I am generally not a big zucchini fan, but this recipe looks really good, so I'm giving it a shot. I think we will have a Caprese first.

Good for you growing your own horseradish. I don't know a thing about what you do with it, just that I like it in a cream sauce on roast beef, lol

slow cooker & am simmering French Onion Soup. It smells AWESOME. Will serve with salad & of course toasted bread & broiled greuyere cheese on top. Yum! I LOVE my Ninja crockpot. The sear feature is awesome.

I'd never heard of it. I just can't imagine a slow cooker searing; that's why I ask.

My romesco sauce turned out so well! Here's the recipe:

setting are low, medium & high. I carmelized the onions today on the med setting then threw in everything else & hit the slow cooker option (high). The high setting sears meat beautifully. The oven goes from 250F to 425F. It's a professional grade non-stick liner so cleanup is a breeze. I've baked cakes, steamed veggies, made chocolate mousse, & all kinds of meat & fish in it. It was about $125, but came with lots of extras. I use it at least 3 times a week. It's been great this summer. I have hardly used the oven at all. I usually scoff at stuff I see on TV, but this has never let me down. If you are in the market for a really versatile appliance, this is it. It is 6 quart oblong model.

a dash of vinegar. Some black pepper. Turn all together, jar tightly and refrigerate. Makes a good base for sauces and dips.

A variety grows wild in the sandy soil of our south county. I used to add to a tri tip BBQ grill - oiled, salted and peppered. Then slivered over the sliced beef. Or tossed in to the BBQ sauce simmer from the get go for the tri tip.

I imagine it will be normal barbecue stuff -- hamburgers, hotdogs, sausage, etc.

LOL, all of the above was on the menu. Also potato salad, corn on the cob, watermelon. Ice cream for dessert.

The housemate is doing dinner tonight. It's basically lasagna, but with each noodle separately layered with other ingredients, then rolled up to be cooked. Throw a layer of sauce on top to keep it from getting too crunchy, and you're good to go.

first attempt of my friend (with me watching!) Daughter and son in law bought the grill for me, and they've been the chefs until today.

WE have work to do, on our techniques, and the damn bugs got me! But was pleasant.

and I realized I should have pre-cooked the drumsticks in micro as I used to do back in DC, when I grilled for family of 4 on our Baby Weber! I really should resurrect my old skills.

Family wan't here yesterday, cbayer, as they're still recovering from having a baby! Will see them this week. But I had a nice time (but for the insects, and about to take an outside shower and then apply anti-itch stuff.) Another hot day here, skies pretty clear, and watching over my baby rose which now has 5 spots developing LEAVES! I won't bore you with those until they are a bit better defined.
