Did a beef roast yesterday. Recently I've been making my own bacon, I found a shop in Deming where I can buy pork bellies. Yes it is much better.

Yes you can cook most everything on these things.

on edit: what brand of lump do you prefer?

cuz that's what Ace had when MamaRosa bought my KJ. Since I've used Royal Oak and Cowboy. Recently I've been going to Las Cruces for dental work and stopped by Lowes and found Frontier at a good price. I have a small bag of Best of the West mesquite I haven't tried yet. Quite frankly I really don't see much difference, it's all charcoal, except I'll never go back to brickettes again.

tends to have a lot of dust when I buy it but that could be because I get the bag on the bottom of the pallet. Mesquite and hickory are my main woods. A good strong flavor

seems to be the nature of lump, some more than others. Could be the brand or the way it was handled or as you said the bottom of the pallet. I did some research and the dust seems to be good for plants.

I have some friends who have an apple orchard so I have a great supply of apple wood, a milder flavor, great for pork, chicken and the like. I also have a friend who does thinning contracts giving me a good supply of mesquite. I used store bought hickory chunks for the beef roast.

There are some pecan orchards down by Las Cruces, next time I head that way I should check in and see if they would let me buy or scrounge some pecan.

It's all great fun.

I've found treated wood products such as plywood in it, chunks of insulation etc. and I'm not the only one, have a look at the lump charcoal reviews http://www.nakedwhiz.com/lumprankdata.htm?name

I've only use one bag as it was given to me as a birthday present, didn't notice anything weird about it, but being a fan of the Nakedwhiz I'm aware of it's low rating. So far the Frontier is working out OK.

Living in a small town I don't have a great variety to choose from, that's why a trip to a 'big town' is so cool with the variety available.

Having said all that, I'm still a rookie at this so I'm trying anything I can find or is given to me. Maybe someday I'll mail order a quantity of well rated lump to try.

Anyway thanks for your response it's always good to hear different experiences.
