Tomatillos become very soft and juicy when cooked, while green tomatoes are going to stay firm. Other than being somewhat sour, green tomatoes don't have much taste, while tomatillos have a lot of taste, imo.

You could try it, but I think you are going to come up with a significantly different dish.

and the page I found has several suggestions. http://www.buzzle.com/articles/substitutes-for-tomatillos.html

I always wondered about this, too, because there are no tomatillos here in Ireland. The page mentioned that there are canned tomatillos, so I will bring some home next time I go to the States.

My favorite is Herdez Salsa Verde. I have a favorite recipe that uses salsa verde. Raw tomatillos will cook down and be like the salsa verde anyway.

Something without much flavor.

Dont' need to over bread either.

Then a mayonnaise based sauce. You can make a remoulade with shrimp if you want.

Play with it and I think you will get it perfect in no time.

even greater. I love this stuff! Green tomatoes are best made into Green Tomato Relish,
Chow Chow, or served as Fried Green Tomatoes, as in Fannie Flagg's story of the same name.

but the color and the seeds look like tomatillo and it tastes like tomatillo salsa. I think they are just calling them green tomatoes instead of tomatillos. I'll bet $1.00 on it.

It's delicious.

La Victoria is good too, and perhaps more widely available.

I don't like the texture of Herdez, for some reason.

Tomatillos are easy to grow, btw.

in lieu of tomatillos. I have tried the Herdez and like it. Haven't tried the others that are made with tomatillos.

On edit: Correction see post 23 above.

Let the tomatoes ripen in a paper bag with an apple.

Go buy some tomatillos.

I'm not being a purist here, but when tomatillos are the costar in a dish, you need to use tomatillos. It would be weird with green tomatoes.

ETA: Salsa verde mentioned above will work. Shrimp love hot stuff.

the two fruits aren't that closely related. I've never cooked with green tomatoes (and my Deep South -raised spouse claims he's never had them), but if you can afford to experiment it's worth a try.

Where do you live that you can't find at least canned tomatillos?
