review:
first the background, we are 'changed our eating" aka not dieting-making a lifestyle change, and hubby has gone gluten free.
so, lots of mainstays are off the menu now unless i could come up with lower fat or gluten free alternatives.
I haven't tried a lot of things yet, but here's what i think so far
Pros:
does any frozen breaded food or fries excellently. and i mean excellent, miles above the results you get from the oven. Crisp and still tender inside.
no added fat like a deep fat fryers
no mess like deep fat, everything is dishwasher safe and just a spritz of cooking spray, nothing sticks.
excellent with small steaks and chops but it may take a while to get on to the times needed
saves the kitchen from heating up with the oven for most dishes.
Cons:
on homemade foods (i tried chicken fingers), i haven't been able to get things as brown as we are trained to expect, but that may be a function of gluten free breading (which is mostly rice based) but the flavor and texture is still very good
small batches. they sell a 'rack' you can add but it's pretty shallow so not much can go underneath. it will do two servings of fries but that's about it - so only good for singles or couples i think.
all in all it's a nice addition to my gadgets

(7,473 posts)Did the Google, prices from $170.00 to $300.00, out of my price range. Don't fry much but this would be too $$ for my use. Would love to find a good alternative. Still can't fry chicken worth a darn.

(111,256 posts)My big purchase this year has been a convection toaster oven, something that is proving itself massively useful. It's bigger than the old Black & Decker, main reason I got it, and will be a lot easier to live out of this summer since I won't be restricted to fish fillets and flattened chicken breasts.
Not heating the kitchen up with the big oven is a big deal here in the southwest desert.
ETA: Sweet rice doesn't brown as much, and if you do get it to that "golden brown" stage, it tends to taste a little burnt. There are "panko style" gluten free bread crumbs at the health food store that are a mixture of various flours that go into gluten free bread and they do get a little more brown. They're pricey, so I make my own out of odds and ends of GF bread for things like meatballs and such and reserve the "panko style" for topping anything I want to get a little crunchy.

(39,961 posts)but not homemade, because the frozen stuff has already been "par-fried" like "parboiled". Meaning, it is fried a bit already so has the oil, and is then flash cooled and frozen.
There really is no such thing as frying anything without oil or fat, it is just how much oil you use, and how much oil or fat remains in the food. I'm sure it is great with small chops!
I'm sure it makes tasty foods, I do hope you experiment with it and come up with new ways to use it. I'm always up for new kitchen gadgets .

(21,675 posts)i just sprung for one yesterday at walmart. yeah, i know, i don't usually do walmart, but the price was right at $79, a super deal. it's a faberware air fryer. soooo, the first thing i made was frozen, seasoned fries. they were PERFECT, and NO oil. like you said, so much better than the oven. today, i'm trying some marinated jerk chicken thighs, bone in. there are recipes for drumsticks and wings, but none for thighs, so i'll just wing it.
fun toy!

(36,827 posts)Browning basically takes 4 things which are sufficient temperature, time, amino acids, and sugar. Browning is basically the carmelization of sugars and since rice has very little sugar, you can expect very little browning even though the heat of the hot air is almost certainly hot enough. So you might try supplementing your breading recipe with a little sugar. It doesn't take much. Even so little that you can barely taste or perhaps not at all will produce a decent browning response.
