(2,949 posts)I love creating a nice table display when my sis & I are preparing a meal. My husband is happy with a TV tray & and paper napkins. He gets overwhelmed when I try to serve him more than meat & potato fare.
He grew up in the south eating out of the garden, so had no idea the diverse menus available until he was drafted and left home. It's been almost 50 years and I still can't get that boy to enjoy anything but the basics. Good thing is, he might not like what I prepare, but he will eat it. I can tell whether to make it again by how much is left on his plate.

(14,559 posts)I once fixed her an herb omelet with smoked salmon garnished with caviar and chervil in bloom. She says, "You know this is a $40 breakfast, right?"
A little encouragement goes a looooong way.

(10,133 posts)And that reminds me - it's time to make gravelax, if I can find some decent salmon.

(10,133 posts)Here in the SF Bay Area some of the local Costcos used to have a fish specialist 3 days a week, who had good shellfish and sometimes whole (well, headless) salmon, but I haven't seen them for a few years. The West Coast salmon season hasn't been very good recently, and when I do find it it's expensive. I have an alternative source but the quality varies. My problem with Costco's salmon these days is that their cuts tend to be fillets, which don't make for good gravelax, or too thin.
