I just bought some gem lettuce at Trader Joe's...

...and I not only love it, but think it is a pretty good value!

Three good, very fresh, tasty and crunchy heads that taste like a cross between Bibb and romaine. Two green, one red.

NO waste to trim off!

And it was only $2.29. Half of a head made a nice big salad for two people. That means the foundation for six big salads for $2.29!

I also bought frozen polenta with spinach and carrots. I make polenta from scratch often, but this just sounded good and is inexpensive. And a package of frozen gnocchi from Italy with red sauce. And a package of frozen artichoke hearts to saute.

What else? 72 percent cocoa bars. A bottle of the pineapple teriyaki marinade. Black raspberry greek yogurt cups. Pearl tomatoes on the vine from Canada (they are pretty good.) And their avocados are always perfect and inexpensive, and the red bell peppers are cheaper there than anywhere.

I am sick with that damned viral cough that has tormented people this year, and needed to get some easy food in the house. I picked it up in the doctors waiting room last week -- there were three people coughing around me.

Ugh. I hate to be sick, and rarely am. But having some stuff from TJ helps!

So I guess it's not quite as little as the other.

Oooh, grilled, yes. Yummy.

Sorry you are sick, too. I know people who have developed pneumonia from this bug, so I am trying to be really careful.

When you're sick, or busy, or can't cook for some other reason.

Taking Michael Pollan's advice about home cooking, we try to make our own. but when that falls through, TJ's is the best option. It seems to be tailor-made for people who either can't or don 't want to cook.

The lettuce you mention sounds like one found at their sister store, Aldi's. I've not seen it at TJs, but I'll look for it next time I go.

The rest of your goodies sound terrific, too. Isn't it nice to go to the freezer and find some easy-to-prepare items?

So sorry you're under the weather, Grasswire.

Gee, yes. Although I had Campbell's veg beef soup for supper. LOL I rarely eat canned soup because of the sodium content. But it was hot and the doctor told me hot liquids. :=)

Is your DH at the NRA show in Chicago? My family member is there.

Have to grow it as a winter crop here in Texas. Great lettuce, easy to grown. Never tried grilling it, will give that a try the next time I grow it.

no bugs or other critters because I was growing it in the winter. I have raised beds in my garden because we are sitting on limestone with very little dirt. Raised beds keep soil at a good temperature. In the winter, I grow different types lettuce and spinach for salads, greens like kale and collards for cooking plus lots of cool weather flowers. Biggest problem in the winter is having a frost, usually can water plants well and cover with newspaper to prevent frost damage.

It was little miniature heads of romaine lettuce, probably enough for a salad for one or two people. I have grown it several seasons, but grew as a winter crop. The little heads of lettuce take a while to mature.

Don't have a Trader Joe's anywhere near me, but this area of Dallas -Oak Cliff -is so popular now (another Austin or Brooklyn) might get some fancier stores, although Fiesta is hard to beat.

...at the doctors' waiting room. November 2015. So when I saw it at Trader Joe's, I picked it up. And I am very very happy with it. Seems like less waste than with romaine. More compact, and very crunchy and flavorful.
