Didn't know this was an old historical tradition - link to adapted modern version:

I might make this if I have time tomorrow. It uses yeast, but is cake not bread. Is spiced and uses dried fruits.

Unfortunately, I have a gluten allergy and can't indulge. But, I can dream! Thanks for sharing.

.....the baker must be a Repub. because she was lamenting the "choices" we have to vote for; and the whiskey was to soothe the disappointment. SO>>>>> just don't watch that. I'm wondering if brandy or rum would be better than whiskey to pour over cake. Any advice on substituting the liquor? I like rum better than whiskey, however I have eaten a delicious whiskey cake.
