Related: About this forumA Genetic Fix to Put the Taste Back in Tomatoes PLEASE!!!
'Over the decades, taste has drained out of supermarket tomatoes.
Harry J. Klee, a professor of horticultural sciences at the University of Florida, thinks he can put it back in within a couple of years.
In this weeks issue of the journal Science, Dr. Klee and his colleagues describe flavor chemicals that are deficient in most modern varieties of tomatoes. In addition, they have located genes that produce these chemicals, and identified heirloom and wild varieties of tomatoes that possess better versions of these genes.
Work has begun to breed a hybrid that restores much of the flavor yet retains the traits large size, sturdy enough for shipping that growers need to succeed.'>>>

(42,641 posts)I buy heritage plants and seeds and they do so much better than the hybridized versions that seem to be selected for packing durability only.

(42,641 posts)The version is called black Krim, and it is from Crimea. The plant produces well into October/November in the Chicago area and the taste is quite good.

(42,641 posts)thanks for one of the very few non-apocalyptic posts on DU this month. I understand the anger, but outside of DU, very few people seem to be paying much attention to what Trump is doing.
And even on a political site, people should try to focus on other things during the day.

(3,040 posts)I only buy fresh tomatoes from farmers markets during their season, I would love to have a good tomato all year long. But, taste seems to be less important than shipping durability.

(25,265 posts)I couldn't get enough of them. They are full of flavor and their taste is exceptional.
I think it's because they grow them the old fashion way - organically - without chemicals.
I'm told that the grocery industry in this country demands that tomatoes be treated so that hold up on the grocery store shelves.

(33,019 posts)The colors were beautiful, but the taste was bland. The tags said they were from Mexico. I will have to set up a grow station to get better tomatoes in winter.

(6,568 posts)Also Campari. They don't have that "watermelon-like" flesh as most other store-bought tomatoes.
We had a Lucky's Market open up earlier this month, and I've seen some heirloom varieties in there (most notably, Cherokee Chocolate), and the beefeater and big beef tomatoes I bought were probably the most flavorful I've had in some time. Especially the beefeater. I just chopped it up for some tacos last night, and not only did it have a very strong, pleasing smell, it tasted DELICIOUS.
