We often went clam digging, the goeducks are also called horse clams, and if you have seen one, you will know why, tho I did not get that point till I was much older.
There were clam shells the size of dinner plates littering the beach, way back then. Baby clams, goeducks, oysters, all free for the taking.

We had a food chopper, permanently attacked to the kitchen counter, and ate clam chowder much like MacDonald describes. Bacon and onion browned together, then ground clams added to the skillet, set aside to blend flavors while the potatoes cook. Mom always added about 1 teas. of sage to a big pot, so I do too. In fact, made some this weekend.

Betty MacDonald also wrote The Egg and I, made into a movie.

There is a nice short bio of her in http://www.historylink.org/File/156

she unfortunately died at age 50, of cancer.

I loved them and read them with my daughters, and they were illustrated by Hilary Knight!
