in Japan at the start of WWII and was pressed into the Japanese army. He said that toward the end of the war, soldiers' rice rations--which would be the best in the country, one would imagine--were literally counted out grain by grain.

He also told me that when propaganda flyers from the US were dropped over Japan, the consensus was that Japan had lost--who could hope to defeat a country so rich it could afford to throw away such high-quality paper?

Japanese soldiers in SE Asia dying like flies from malaria, malnutrition, tossed aside like garbage. After the war, widows and orphans treated like garbage. Horrible.
