Ive been binging British baking on Netflix. Its a whole other world where theyre always baking things Ive never heard of with unfamiliar ingredients (castor sugar? strong flour?). However, they havent a clue about what an American pie is, confusing it with an open-faced tart.

(34,105 posts)about that show and I finally watched all of them, loved watching them. I have not checked to see if there are new shows yet. I found it fun and fascinating.
I usually am not into those shows but there is another British show where people take old things they own and have them refurbished. Old antiques, some family heirlooms. It was good too but there was less detail that I would have liked. Still it was interesting. I cannot remember the name of it to save my soul right now.

(34,136 posts)Same as you, I wish they showed more detail because I have old stuff I'd love to refurbish. But then, YouTube has lots of videos that do give details on how to do some of that stuff, while The Repair Shop shows what is possible.
I found it while we were in the UK and when we got home, I found it on one of the streaming services, but they only had two seasons. of it - there have been five seasons made.

(111,245 posts)you can make your own caster sugar out of granulated sugar, it's just a superfine sugar.
It differs from US confectioner's sugar because there is no cornstarch in it to prevent its turning into a big lump. You can't substitute confectioner's sugar for caster sugar in UK recipes,it just doesn't work, the cornstarch screws up the chemistry.
Strong flour is bread flour, high gluten flour.
The GBBO concentrates a little too much on the fussy, pretty stuff you'd expect at a bakery. UK tastes are different, and some of the flavor combinations would hang up on a tonsil, but I was a faithful watcher until they went for the money.
There is a spinoff on BBC, however, The Great Pottery Throwdown. Two seasons are at You Tube and they're well worth watching even if you've never thrown a pot. They're just as nuts as the baking show, one episode had the potters build flush toilets.
ETA: A poster on another site had a DIL on this season. She's been very good about explaining UK ingredients. Her DIL didn't win, but did manage to appear on quite a few of the shows. It's a great show because they're not dangling a big pot of money in front of the contestants, so there's cooperation instead of sabotage. That's what makes it refreshing.

They'll never learn.
