I have groceries delivered weekly from a local grocery store, and ordered a 10 pound turkey. They substituted a 30 pound turkey! I spent all day yesterday thawing the dang thing.

I am now prepping the turkey, ham, and all the fixings including apple and pumpkin pie. Three people. And weeks of leftovers!

And: its 12 o'clock somewhere!

Happy Thanksgiving!

2. Sweet potatoes with oranges....

It goes by several names, but we just called them sweet potatoes because that's how Mom made them. My favorite.

I've never been able to exactly replicate her recipe. Good, but just not quite right. Like many things she cooked, it wasn't written down. How much of this or that...she'd say "It depends...I can't tell you, sweetie, I'd have to show you." Passed down generation to generation by observing. And no canned sweet potatoes in her kitchen. She insisted on raw sweet potatoes, prepared the way she did it. The same way it had be done for God knows how long. Not surprising, using vanilla pudding mix in banana pudding was sacrilege. She had to make the vanilla pudding from scratch or "it just didn't taste right." My sisters use to get an ear full for taking such short cuts.

This is close, except Mom didn't use as much cinnamon. We also add a couple tablespoons of lemon juice to the glaze to give it some kick. Good stuff.

...Gardein Turkey Loaf (It really is good...a great alternative for Vegetarians - makes great turkey sandwiches the next day.)
Gravy
Mashed Potatoes
Homemade Brandied Orange Cranberry Relish
Bread Stuffing with apples, raisins, and walnuts
Home baked sourdough bread

Green salad with home grown pomegranate seeds, tangerine, and bleu cheese in an orange vinaigrette

Pumpkin Pie with either whipped cream or ice cream
Cappuccino from home roasted coffee beans

Watching flocks of turkeys run around the property - (It really is fun this time of year to watch the turkey flocks run around. They are magnificent when they take off in short flight. It is hard to believe that such a large bird can soar so gracefully.)

Gobble till you wobble!

Happy Thanksgiving to all. Thanks for keeping me (somewhat) sane over the last year.

4. We're doing a strange Thanksgiving dinner, this year.

Since my daughter is a teacher and sil (retired) delivers Meals on Wheels, we keep our distance due to the virus. However, my daughter suggested we divide up the preparation for Thanksgiving and then pass the food back and forth in my garage.

I am in charge of the Cornish hens, 2ce baked potatoes, wild rice dressing, deviled eggs, mandarin orange salad and pecan pie.

She is in charge of scalloped corn, green bean casserole, fruit salad, crescent rolls and pumpkin pie.

Although we have duplicates of starchy foods, we are making enough food for leftovers for the weekend. With extra hens, they can have 2ce baked or wild rice dressing, etc. With the extra time, we'll each finish Christmas decorating and just veg.

All the other little families are doing the same.

A safe and Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. Do the best you can.

I couldn't remember how many minutes per pound.

The good news for me is that since there are no guests, I don't have to keep to a schedule. Most of the sides are already made, so when the turkey comes out of the oven, it can rest while I warm up stuffing and potatoes, and make gravy.

Only two of us, this was my original plan.

Sauté a turkey breast (like the chicken ones) in browned butter with fresh sage. Once lightly browned put on sheet pan in oven. Sides (also on sheet pan), slice sweet potato handful of brussle sprouts and onion drizzled with olive oil. Bake till done, serve turkey with sage butter. Dessert cranberry tart.

Well decided just did not "feel" the holiday, so just some chicken, but I did get off my rear yesterday and make the cranberry tart and some pumpkin cheesecake bars, then delivered some of each to my sister across town.

the main change is I am doing a smaller turkey (after 40 years I have finally learned to NOT get the biggest turkey just because it is on sale. they are just too hard to deal with. if we ever have a crowd I will do more than one) and I have spatchcocked it. I also got a spare breast so I can make sure we have some good leftovers for sandwiches too. been craving a turkey and swiss on sourdough.

there will be homemade cranberry sauce, waldorf salad, peas with pearl onions, sausage stuffing/dressing, gross sweet potatoes with goo, mashed white potatoes and gravy, store made butter rolls, pickles and olives. for desert (and tomorrow morning breakfast) I did two pumpkin pies and there will be plenty of whipped cream for it and the coffee.

I have two non-drinkers in the house so I splurged on fancy Martinellis (costs more than my wine!) and I have some wines stashed - if the other occasional drinker will share a glass I will open a champagne, other wise I have a couple whites and a red to choose from. Or I can make a cocktail with homegrown limes and mint. anybody that knows me can guess what that would be.

it has been a horrible year for so many and I know you have had a real loss, but I wish you some enjoyment and hope for better times. enjoy your day!

We had:

Ham from the Polish deli. Turns out the RG bought enough entrees for the entire weekend and this was his choice for today. With the ham were peas and potatoes.

The first course, however, was fresh pasta with wild mushroom sauce. He made the sauce himself, but the fresh pasta was purchased at the grocery store.

The salad I made was very pretty because it had pomegranate seeds in it. It was tossed greens, toasted pecans, and sliced pear.

For dessert a cake, also from the Polish deli. Had fruit and nuts in it and we topped with a little whipped cream. Later we had some chocolates and "dream of Scandinavia" cookies. Ginger tea.

The RG was excited that his box of wine arrived yesterday, so he was happily choosing a bottle to go with the meal. Me, I had Cosmic Cranberry kombucha.

Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, roasted butternut squash, wild rice w/mushrooms, steamed green beans/brussels/broccoli, fresh cranberry sauce, apple and cherry pies made from scratch. I grew up with wild rice/mushrooms for Thanksgiving so gotta keep that going, of course. My kids love it. Hope you are all having a lovely day.

We had
roast turkey breast
mashed potatoes
stuffing
gravy
corn pudding
broccoli cheese casserole
deviled eggs
pumpkin pie

A meal was plated up and put out on the back stoop for our neighbor who doesn't cook. It was good to share with him again and unfortunate that we had to keep distance this year.

======

FLFC was into apple today. Dancing and barking for me to peel and cut him another piece. He ate some turkey and some beef, but apples and peanut butter bacon treats was his desire today. We are trying some CBD oil as well as the steroids for him. He seems to feel better and eat more with the meds, but his cough worsens.

So I kept it simple.

I made my first shrimp cocktail with shrimp from the store. Everything: I poached the shrimp and made the cocktail sauce.

Leftovers: Half of a New York Strip Steak and Green Beans with Potatoes.

No pie. Just going to bed after dinner.

I'm picking up a free range turkey to cook tomorrow.
