I love brussel sprouts and I don't care who knows it

There, I said it.

I have been eating them regularly for the past couple months while they've been 'in season' (is that even a thing anymore?) and I can't get enough of them.

And I don't mean doctored up with all kinds of special treatments and seasonings--not sauteed in balsamic, no bleu cheese crumbles anywhere in sight.

I'm talking a pot of boiling salted water, sprouts cooked until al dente, then slathered with quality (real) butter and a sprinkle of salt.

Not even ashamed a little bit.

because I love them no matter what. Simplest is the best, but they are good (to me) no matter what. So I default to easiest.

Sprouts in a bowl. Sprinkle with water, not much at all. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and cook on 50% until they're done to your liking. Take the wrap off, drain if there's water left in the bowl, and toss with your butter.

It's a great way to cook pretty much any firm veggie, even better than steaming.

In a cereal bowl, with vinegar instead of milk. I'm in heaven. Pass the Beano, please.

At first I envisioned the sprouts floating in a bowl of vinegar (white? apple cider? balsamic?) but then I don't really believe that. Do tell.

Those all involve just butter and/or EVOO, salt, and pepper. Maybe an herb like fresh Rosemary or Thyme.

And smoke.

BIG Brussel Sprouts fan.

Fresh ones only, of course.

They turn to shit when frozen.

Recently I've just been cutting them in half, cutting up some red or yellow potatoes, giving everything a little drizzle of extra light olive oil, and sprinkling on some salt, pepper, and parsley and dumping it all on a sheet cake pan, then popping it into the oven at 350F for about a half hour. Last night I also cooked some Italian sausage, cut the links into into chunks, and mixed those in with the potatoes and brussels sprouts. Nice, hearty one-pan dinner that takes almost no prep time.

toss the sprouts with a bit of oil, then spread out on a baking pan and roast in the oven until tender. Add some balsamic vinegar or salt if you want, or just eat them.

I'm spoiled: I live near Monterey county, where they grow a lot of Brussels sprouts. Whenever I'm there in the fall I stop by a farm stand and buy a stalk that was still growing that morning (and they often show up at my local farmers' market). Fresh off the stalk is the best way!
