So, once upon a time, your door color meant something

because most people couldn't read, the door colors in the town said something about its owner. IIRC, the black door was a doctor, the blue door was the constable, the red door was the hospitality house, etc.

My other browser has some sort of malware I can't remove, or I would have a bookmarked link for you. I can't seem to find anything about this now. So, my question is, does this mean anything now?

In the modern world, is there any symbolism behind the colors we put on the exterior of our homes as it was way back when?

I mostly agreed with it, but I like a stained door because I am a fan of the wood grain. I like yellows, it's probably my favorite color, and I like to see the grain of wood.

One time I made a experimental stain out of curry, and finished a board and batten poplar door with it. I guess that one encompasses what I like the best.

One will often see blue doors and shutters.

I do know for a fact that that blue, even the palest tints of blue, keep winged insects away.
We have a large carport, it had a white ceiling, wasps and moths and other flying things would be buzzing around all the time, esp. flying towards the ceiling.
When we painted the house a calm grey, we painted the carport roof the palest of blue, it looks white to our eyes.
Not a flying insect in the carport since, except for mason bees, which are large bumble type, completely harmless.

As for door meanings, I found this, various web search sites:

In Scotland, homeowners would paint their front door red to signify that they had paid off their mortgage.

In Ireland, front doors are painted red to ward-off ghosts and evil spirits.

5. I have a blue front door now, and am getting ready to hang blue shutters....

The front two are black right now, but I am getting ready to do a little Spring sprucing up.

6. We painted our house a few years ago, I am so glad we took before and after pics

It had been painted...get this....Pepto pink!!!!!!
A very popular in color in Fla. where the former owners were from, but not so much popular here.

So after way too much discussion, Mr. Dixie and I agreed on just the right shade of grey, "not too light, not too dark".....
he came back with a few gallons of the paint, perfectly blended....called Confederate Grey.......shoulda known.

So, house painted, looks real good, time to tackle the dark greenish, badly in need of sprucing up, front door.
A week of discussion later, we settled on blue/green grey ish color.
the cool thing about our house is the light changes so often in the front, so the paint colors look different thru out the day.

Every line of paint has its own name for each color, so identical colors will have different names depending on where you buy the paint.

We actually tried to match the house next door, so the colors would not clash, even tho we can only SEE the house next door from Dec. to March, when the leaves drop off some trees.
Did not want to be that garish house in the neighborhood..
altho, telling people it is the Pepto pink house DID make it easier for folks to find it!

12. Oh, I almost forgot.

The hardware on a front door says so much.

The type of hinges, the color may it be brass or bronze means a lot. And especially the lock set tells you something.

You can have a letter slot, you can have colonial fan glass, you can have Victorian glass that is half the door, or you can have craftsman glass on the top third of the door...even leaded glass which changes everything.

I have always thought the front door says more about the house than about everything else.

I know the thread was about door color, but I couldn't help myself.

13. I'm going to paint ours purple.

The house is white with black shutters. The landscaping has a lot of pink and purple flowers and I'm not a big fan of pink. Purple is my favorite color so.....

I have white with black shutters too, but my roof has blue in it. I was going to go light beige and even got the paint, but my next door neighbor painted his that color, so I am going to cut mine with white paint to make it a shade or two lighter, and then inky blue shutters.

I like pink flowers, but my house is in the shade of a huge elm tree, so I will take whatever blooms.
