Not sure if this is the right place, but maybe. I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment building and have a small balcony. I want to do some container gardening, planting stuff that I can actually use for meals and so forth. I can probably fit about 4 medium sized pots on my balcony, which only gets morning sun. So I'm thinking I could grow some peppers, cherry tomatoes, and .... what else?

1. scarlet nantes short carrots? loose-leaf lettuce? chives or green onions?

Various herbs such as basil or parsley work well in pots.

If you have a trellis for them to grow on, possibly sugar snap peas or pole beans, though they may take a lot of water, and I don't know how they'd do with not so much sun. Consider a bush cucumber or zucchini plant.

Every part of the country has different bugs and birds and viruses and molds that can wipe out garden plants at various stages, so watch out for that, check the plants every day or two for problems. Good luck!

3. If you have a container or can fit a container about the size of a

5 gallon paint bucket size, potatoes grow great in containers.

5. You will need more than morning sun for a good tomato crop, they like lots of sun.

Maybe you could hook up a grow lamp for the rest of the day to be sure they get enough light. You can grow leafy stuff like lettuce and herbs with less direct sunlight. I'm guessing from your name that you are in Minnesota. Ive grown cherry tomatoes in the past and they do fine with limited sun. When I tried the big full sized ones, you're right, it was a disaster. Thanks!

That would be my choice. It's easy and you can snip off what you need with a scissors and it'll grow back.
