The Bleeding Hearts.

These are another of my nostalgic favorites. My Grandmother always had these, growing along side her driveway. I bought a couple of plants but they just weren't really looking healthy. So, I dug them up and replanted them in front of the house (south facing) and they are now absolutely thriving.

i have tried many times to get them to grow in my shady little gangway garden to no avail.
i think it's more the soil than the sun, tho. very alkali here.

i had a neighbor that was a fanatic gardener. she let me help her sometimes.
she had a huge pink and white one.
i do have dutchman's breeches in my sunny garden, tho. so adorable.

I clearly remember my aunt showing me her Bleeding Hearts when I was very young. I was fascinated by them and my grand’s Four O’Clocks.

As to Bleeding Hearts, I have the traditional pink, lovely white, and several with chartreuse leaves and white flowers. They safely grow along the chain-link fence where I don’t accidentally dig them up after they go dormant in late summer.

Hummingbirds love them but deer don't.

I have some growing in a south-facing, shaded garden. Soon they will be up!
