(102,138 posts)Ever since I read that article on rampaging poached elephants as a model for PTSD in NYMagazine a few years ago, it was really driven home how little we appreciate the emotional spectrum of these great animals.

(2,594 posts)but it was probably even more unscientific to ignore them and has probably led to more bad science and misunderstanding because science keeps looking for some boundary between animals and humans to justify feeling superior.
Another interesting note is there was a neurologist whose name still garners looks of disgust, but he predicted that elephants had subsonic communication long before it was confirmed. John C. Lilly had odd points, but was ahead of the game on that one.

(14,656 posts)What if each evening the networks would report one good story such
as this one. Then an hour after the news is over ask viewers to recall
the news stories. Bet this one would come up first. imho
If humans can't teach compassion to each other maybe animals can.

(18,219 posts)I had a feeling what it was, and clicked on it, to words in and I knew the story....and teared up. You do this to me too often!
This is part 2 of the story, from a PBS Nature show. It is probably the most sad/happy/teary/joyous thing that I have ever watch. And I have watched this so often, and recommended it to everyone who loves elephants.
If you want to help elephants like this, the Elephant Sanctuary is where this all happened. This is how I first found out about it.

And if anyone wants more information on Shirley and Jenny, it is at the site----but don't think that your crying is over if you chose to read their stories.

(9,033 posts)and like an elephant I have never forgotten it: the horrible scars, the bent cage when these two old friends finally met again...I was crying (then and now) and at the same time filled with rage about what we humans do to magnificent creatures the world over, for our own amusement...aaaaaaaaaarrrrgh!
At least this story has a happy ending.
