Landlady came over today to check out the various pipe problems. The scary one is the sewer pipe in the basement since it carries all the water from all the fixtures in the house including what goes through the garbage disposal and the potty... eeeeeeeekkkk! That pipe is ancient and got a huge - like HUGE - vertical crack in it from top to bottom that in some parts was so wide I could look through the crack. It must have had a tiny thin crack that had been leaking for awhile though I never got water on the floor but there were rust streaks all down the outside of the pipe where the crack was. One day I was draining out the bathtub and happened to go down to the basement for something and water from the draining tub was just GUSHING through the crack. There was never the slightest bit of odor though so I figured whatever went down the potty must use some different pipe. Not so. I went to the local hardware store and talked to a really helpful man there and explained what the pipe looked like and what happened, and he told me that whatever gets flushed down the potty goes through that pipe and wouldn't ordinarily smell. He got me some putty epoxy and explained how to patch the crack with it, and said the pipe HAD to be replaced ASAP because it could crack anywhere else at any time or totally burst all together. The epoxy glop worked great, and so far nothing at all has leaked through. So far so good with that pipe, but it's that one that makes me the most nervous.
Two days after that fiasco once again I was draining out the tubby and noticed a slow drip coming from a small crack in the ceiling that wasn't there before at the bottom of the steps right under the tub. When I first went to this house to check it out to see if I could rent it my landlady's husband was patching that same section of the ceiling. They said the last tenants they had were pigs and never used a shower curtain, so the whole bathroom floor was such a mess it had to be ripped up and replaced and water from them doing that must have leaked through that part of the ceiling. Turns out they were wrong about that. The pipe right under the bathtub drain had a really slow leak since it's rusted to hell and was basically slowly disintegrating. At least that bit isn't somewhere down in the ceiling and access to it is right where the panel is behind the tubby fixtures. I was terrified they'd have to move in for a month and rip up the whole ceiling trying to find and fix the leak and then build a new ceiling. Yoshi noooo likey that!
Well, the next day after I showered, blow dried, puffed, smeared and powdered I go downstairs and there's all this plaster that fell off the ceiling all over the floor with a gaping L shaped hole in the ceiling and a soggy kind of foam pad that they must have used when they patched that part of the ceiling that was soaking wet and crumbling apart. After I got home from my running around applying for jobs I spent the rest of the night trying to secure that pad better to the ceiling and blocking up the crack as best I could with several plastic grocery shopping bags (which was really irritating since they make great poopy pick-up bags, so I hoard them). It still leaks, but not so bad, and I have a bucket under the one spot where it drips and got the carpet all cleaned up. Of course Yoshi had to stroll back and forth through the damp plaster that fell on the carpet and track it all over the house! I think he did this on purpose because he knew I'd have to spend a lot more time vacuuming, and since he hates Mr. Scary Vacuumer he gets to hang out in the yard relaxing in the nice weather while I slave away cleaning up. Jerk.
So anyway.... I graduated from bartending school and got T.I.P.S. certified as well since some places require it and have been out everywhere trying to get a job. I had no idea it would be this hard. Every place must be getting at least 50 or more resumes, and of course they'll want to hire the most experienced person they can since they still only pay the bare ass minimum (weee! a whole $2.51!!!) regardless of who they hire. I swear that in order to get that first damn job bartending you have to know someone. I had thought having gone to school and getting T.I.P.S. certified would made a difference but so far pffffffffftttttttttt. Worse, I no longer have any professional references since all the places I worked before either are closed now or it was so long ago they wouldn't remember who the hell I was. I'm not kidding, I'm considering enlisting one of my neighbors to fake being a professional reference for me. I'm just about broke, so I need to get a job pronto. I got a big dog to feed!
